Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam Backup & Replication is excellent backup software for your virtualized environment. We use it to back up virtual machines. It is being used the whole company-wide but is being phased out in favor of a different solution at the moment. The phaseout is not due to deficiencies in Veeam Backup & Replication, but due to the need for a target to be provisioned outside of the software.
Pros
- Veeam Backup & Replication is near flawless.
- New cloud capabilities are being developed and released.
Cons
- We moved on from Veeam Backup & Replication because we prefer a solution where the backup storage is integrated with the software solution.
- Instant recovery is only as good as your underlying storage infrastructure.
- Veeam Backup & Replication allows us to recover files, especially granular Exchange recoveries quickly.
- Instant recovery of a whole Veeam Backup & Replication is possible so long as your backup storage can cope.
We ran 100 Veeam Backup & Replication across five hosts very comfortably through Veeam Backup & Replication. This was as anticipated, as our growth is typically not too aggressive. We did not run cloud or physical workloads on Veeam Backup & Replication, although we did try some cloud capabilities. I was less impressed with Veeam's cloud offerings than with a few other vendors. I do feel that their cloud and physical protection offerings are improving, and version 10 should continue this trend.
We did trial this capability, but low-cost cloud storage is still seemingly more expensive than on-site NAS level storage. Of course, factoring in the offsite benefit, there is value to be had there, but it is typically never truly lower cost. Veeam Backup & Replication's flexibility in dealing with multiple cloud providers, both public and private, is excellent.
We benefited from SureBackup, and even though we are in the process of moving to another backup solution, this is one part of Veeam Backup & Replication that I find nobody is working to replicate. Spinning up backups in an automated fashion and subjecting them to testing with subsequent reporting is the ultimate in peace of mind when it comes to your backups. If the backups are tested working, and they are offsite, how much better can you get? DR compliance plans look much better with an attached, up to date backup test report.
We initially selected Veeam Backup & Replication over Netbackup years ago and have been very happy with the software. Our current transition to another solution is strictly because we can't stomach purchasing more ExaGrid backup units. Veeam's SureBackup feature, as well as it's unrivaled granular Exchange restore, functions do set it apart in the software only backup solution space. Support is top-notch, and we have always been able to get knowledgeable technicians on the phone quickly.
