Software Version

Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

For customers who are not yet familiar with Veeam Backup & Replication, we encourage them to install and use the free version, learn about it, and even dislike it. We then encourage them to purchase a license. We are also working on virtual storage plans to protect them against Veeam issues. We educate our customers about using local backup plans, remote location backups, and cloud backups. We emphasize the importance of cloud backup at every opportunity.

Pros

  • Backup
  • Recovery
  • Replication
  • Support
  • Test Lab.

Cons

  • Slow installation. It would like to install faster
  • I wish there were recovery solutions for broken chain structures
  • There could be support for more than 10 virtual machines in the free version. Some users may need it.
  • Sometimes SQL vb DB errors
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • NAS filers
  • Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
  • Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • License portability as your environment needs change
  • Utilizing backup copies for secondary purposes via DataLabs
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Failover or recovery scripts/plans for orchestrated recovery
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
I am an employee of a consulting firm. I have 11 clients. All of them have either a free version or a licensed paid version. There are an average of 20 other employees like me. They also have their own customers. All of our customers usually have Veeam as well. There are also customers using Acronis in between. Many of our customers have their systems protected by cloud-based backup. 4 of my customers have both physical and cloud backups. Others just use Veeam for physical backup and are satisfied.
  • I take backups of my clients with confidence. Happy people feel safe.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication gives us confidence in a crisis situation.
  • Knowing that we have backups taken with Veeam Backup & Replication means we've solved more than half the problem.
I previously compared Acronis and Arcserve with Veeam. Two things caught my attention: backup/restore speed and the ease of use of the interface. With a simple interface, you can quickly create a job and start backing up immediately. The backup/restore process was, from what I saw, twice as fast as the others. I don't mind mentioning the names of the other applications I used for testing here. The first one I tried was Arcserve Backup. The other was Acronis. Arcserve was incredibly slow; restoring a backup of an average 150-200GB server took almost 5-6 hours. This might have been influenced by the network speed of the system at that time, etc. But after that, Acronis, which I tested under the same conditions, restored almost twice as fast. Finally, I tried Veeam Backup & Replication. Until then, I saw Veeam Backup & Replication as just a software trying to make a name for itself and aspiring to the big leagues. Seeing that it restored even faster than Acronis, I decided not to use any other backup software anymore. This test is the most compelling reason for me to choose Veeam Backup & Replication.
I've used Veeam Backup & Replication as a cloud solution for some of my clients. The configuration steps are quite easy. You can send backups to different platforms in the cloud. Although the free version has a slight limitation in cloud backup speed, it's still very successful. Just backing up locally isn't enough in today's world. I try to explain this to my clients at every opportunity. Cloud backup is essential for a reliable system, and Veeam Backup & Replication fulfills this perfectly.
Most of our small-scale customers own NAS devices. We perform backups by connecting to the NAS via iSCSI or file sharing. The steps for defining the NAS and creating tasks in Veeam Backup & Replication are quite user-friendly. I have never used NFS. But I constantly work with SMB. I think Veeam Backup & Replication is very successful in this regard as well.
As I mentioned before, I used ArcServe and Acronis. ArcServe, in particular, was a licensed product at my previous company, and I had purchased a three-year license. After comparing it to Veeam, I regretfully realized it was a waste of money. It will never be able to support you in emergency situations. Also, at that time, it didn't have cloud support. Acronis, while better, still lacked a user-friendly, simple interface and wasn't as fast as desired. Furthermore, ArcServe is an application where you can find very few resources online to solve problems you encounter.

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Thanks to the fast restore feature, we can instantly bring the servers up and running in emergencies. This gives us a great advantage and saves us time until we solve the root cause of the problem. It reduces the workload and pressure on us, allowing us to focus on the problem faster. Furthermore, by quickly creating backups before a critical operation, we can prevent future problems. These features alone are what keep us hooked.
