Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

Our data infrastructure consists of many modern and legacy line of business applications in a hybrid environment. Meeting the security, retention, and high availability needs of a public-facing municipal government requiring 24/7/365 uptime can be a tall order. Veeam Data Platform fits the bill perfectly with granular backup controls, immutable cloud hosting, and a wide array of platform support at a very reasonable price.

Pros

  • Customizable reporting provides at-a-glance visibility into the health of our backup infrastructure.
  • Integrated threat hunter capabilities ensure backup integrity and provide yet another layer of protection at the file level.
  • SureBackup is an amazing tool that saves time when performing DR recovery scenario testing. This feature alone frees up hours of technician time.
  • Integrated migration tools for various hypervisors eliminate multiple steps when moving between hosts.

Cons

  • Veeam Tech Support is very responsive, but user-facing failure reports could be a little more verbose for those of us who don't mind doing some troubleshooting before opening a ticket.
  • In our use case, I've not experienced many issues that are showstoppers.
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • NAS filers
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • Integration with cyber-security tools for SecureRestore
  • Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
About 20 workloads are protected. Planned expansion will move the environment to around 30 workloads, and Veeam licensing is built with a common-sense tiered approach.
  • Implementing Veeam Data Platform as our backup platform provided an immediate 50% yearly cost savings over the previous vendor. In our case, this was nearly $30k/year.
  • Veeam Data Platform gives us in-house control over all aspects of the backup strategy, eliminating the need to bring in additional vendors and introduce points of failure and potential delays.
  • Scalability and multi-platform support give me short- and long-term options when considering budgets and infra changes.
I was brought into the organization to secure, modernize, and improve the IT infrastructure. The main drivers were cost savings, practicality, & reliability. My past experience with and familiarity with Veeam Data Platform guided me back to a product I know and trust. After literally decades of living with the evolution of backup products such as BackupExec, Commvault, etc., it's refreshing to have a usable, mature product in Veeam Data Platform. With proper planning and implementation, it simply works.
We don't currently protect any cloud workloads, but we do use Wasabi and Veeam Vault for storage and data archival. In our application, maintaining compliance mandates specific data retention periods and business practices require an optimal RPO and RTO.

Veeam Data Platform with cloud storage has proven itself multiple times. For example, a recent desktop redirection glitch necessitated the recovery of a specific revision of a file. I was able to locate, verify, and restore a file a file from 44 days prior in about 20 minutes and save months of data entry for the employee.
Veeam Data Platform's native ability to use a NAS as a backup target and replicate the contents to the cloud with deduplication reduces our backup windows and speeds recovery time. The number of disparate systems and platforms we protect make it very handy to have the NAS as a go-to for quick local recovery, and cheap local storage allows for many more snapshots and revisions.
I chose Veeam Data Platform over other platforms due to the following considerations:
1) Former successes with the product
2) Maturity and stability
3) Active development with a clear roadmap
4) Great tech support and knowledgebase
5) Very competitive price point
6) No vendor lock-in with cloud storage or appliances Backup solutions can be granular to a fault. Veeam Data Platform does backup and does it well.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

Veeam Data Platform has been a very good fit for our mixed environment and has freed up valuable technician time while remaining budget friendly. I realize this isn't often the case, but, for our application, I haven't found a workload yet that isn't supported.

I don't have much input on where it may not work, as it has been very reliable after planning and configuration for our specific needs.
