Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use it for daily, weekly, monthly backups of all our windows and linux based servers in our Veeam architecture. We also use it for Two different sites and replication is happening amongst them. We also have disaster recovery created on site level. All of our backups are actively monitored for malware and virus protection which is provided by Veeam.
Pros
- Taking Incremental backups
- Instant VM Recovery in case needed
- Data Replication across multiple sites & cloud are pretty good.
Cons
- Taking backups on aws, as it only takes EC2 but we need something which can take full backup eg.lamba, Routes and all.
- Cost as it can be quite expensive for small to medium business.
- Proper integration with HyperV as supposed to Vmware
- Virtualized workloads
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
There are actually quite a few products where Veeam is used for backup such as all of virtual machines which are under VMware and AWS ec2. All of the storage which is hosted on Nimble for snapshots of Veeam. I know some of them also use it for backing up M365 products, but we do not use it.
- Its easy to use and no nonsense stuff
- The cost is increasing drastically from past 2 years which can be quite challenging
- Intergration with Hyper-V with full functionally will be superior option.
The ease of taking backups and instant recovery has led us to choose Veeam over all other solutions. To add on we already had VMware environment and we needed some solution which can also take snapshots, replication across sites and data loss prevention as replication would be encrypted. Veeam also passes all of our compliance and regulatory requirements.
Currently some of our backups are going to secondary site and some directly goes to AWS. Retention and disaster recovery in cloud would be pretty advantageous. By storing data with deduplication Veeam ultimately helps us with significant amount of cost saved specially in cloud environment. These pretty much sums up our organisational needs at the moment.
Firstly, we choose Veeam long time ago. At that time, there were not many cloud-based systems, so we had no intention of cloud backups. We did POC of all the above-mentioned systems and all of our engineers liked Veeam over all others due to super easy to use and restoring was within seconds. Also there was huge cost difference across those systems where Veeam again stands out.
