Overall Satisfaction with VMware ESXi
VMware ESXi is currently used by most of my organization, and I manage two separate sites that have it implemented. It provides a stable and reliable base for our virtual infrastructure. It has been easy to maintain and control, and expansion has also been quite straightforward when we've had the requirement.
Pros
- Allows control of VM's on the host, which is helpful if vSphere is unavailable.
- As you would expect, it integrates perfectly with vSphere.
Cons
- A better interface to monitor the logs in VMware Esxi would be helpful.
- While using VMware ESXI for our virtual infrastructure hosts, we have had a little downtime, and the VMware ESXI system has caused none of the downtimes.
- The VMware ESXi hosts have also been able to recover well when there have been unexpected power failures to the kit. This has been very valuable as in the past, we have lost servers when this has happened.
At the time of implementation, VMware ESXi (and the rest of the VMware virtualization suite) had far better functionality and capabilities than other products on the market, particularly Hyper-V. It was chosen as it appeared to be the best fit for our environment in terms of our requirements and budget. VMware ESXi has proven itself in the time since implementation.
