Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard Network Security
WatchGuard serves as our primary unified threat manager and firewall to help protect and maintain the integrity and usability of our small office network. We run a handful of services internally, including VOIP, and rely on cloud-based services many of which are deemed mission critical. In the era of continuous internet-based communication (conferencing, messaging, portal-based b2b relays, etc.) the need for a security device that can continuously update and function with minimal staff load is high.
Pros
- network monitoring
- auto-updating (service subscriptions, threat updates)
- reliable and stable
- S. based support
Cons
- initial setup can be confusing for a novice
- no recycling or physical trade-in for old WG device program
- wizard or guide for adding new common services (i.e. VOIP)
- at least 3-5X a year (that I know of), this device has single-handedly prevented members of our staff from inadvertently connecting to services they did not intend and could have resulted in security disruption
- although you can never rule out human-behaviour-engineered threat, it's helpful to know that our network has a higher level, enterprise-class control and monitoring behind it
- any time our network might be showing signs of abnormal performance, the WatchGuard control panel is the first place I turn to help identify the level of concern. It can quickly set my mind at ease and help to identify the specific device that might be out of compliance
CDW has helped us connect with unit and licensing upgrades through the years. They are fast and have a team who can help you find the right product for a specific need. We've been happy to work with them - though for configuration or deeper service issues we still rely on the Support from our WatchGuard services if needed.
Having a single place to view and maintain security services, especially one which I can see the daily pattern of update signatures and definitions as they apply puts my mind at ease. Being able to access such a dashboard without leaving my desk allows me to be more productive - and many of the central software updates apply and reboot in less than 20 minutes, giving me the choice to do these on a more flexible schedule.
In an era of heightened security and constant threats of many flavors, we feel more effective as a company having enterprise class security backing up our day-to-day business interactions. We don't have the budget for a dedicated IT team, so this is an effective solution to monitor and help reign in the digital demands and keep our business running.
WatchGuard is more configurable and performs what I feel to be a deeper and more thorough inspection of network traffic. The technology and support on their devices can keep a WatchGuard appliance running for years - whereas with other solutions I feel as if the best option is to purchase new hardware every couple of years to keep up with features and performance.
