Adobe Captivate

Well suited: Gives your presentation a different appearance and allows you to create simulations that lessen your steps when it comes to making training/simulation videos.Less appropriate: Not as user-friendly as I thought. Animations/states are hidden and cause the creator to take extra steps versus using a different type of software program tool.

Pros

  • I love the Text-to-Speech feature in Adobe Captivate. I use to record all of the audio manually, which was time-consuming to say the least. Now, I can easily convert text to speech before I submit the project which gives users, SMEs and other stakeholders a good idea how the finished project will look and sound.
  • Pan and Zoom is another feature that I like to use in Adobe Captivate. When creating application simulations, this feature allows you to pan to an area or zoom in on specific areas to bring more clarity to the end user.
  • I love Adobe Captivate Interactions. Every time I'm faced with a project, I try to think of how to use one. I use interactions to create quizzes, graphs, or whenever I need to another level of engagement.
  • The latest version of Adobe Captivate makes it easy to publish content for mobile and desktop users. I love how professional my projects look as a result.

  • Provide timely and individualized feedback.
  • Allow for the teacher to check for understanding, for the entire class, in one view.
  • Present an array of different interactive lesson items, at the fingertips of every student.

Cons

  • I honestly can't think of how to improve Adobe Captivate at this time. I've been using Adobe Captivate for years to create eLearning content. While I also use other authoring tools, I always come back to Adobe Captivate to do my heavy lifting. It's a great product!
  • I just thought about one thing. I really like the way I can animate square and circles in Camtasia to look as if they were hand drawn. I wish I could do the same with Adobe Captivate.

  • It would be nice if there was a grade book that interacted with our LMS.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

I love Nearpod because it's student centered but teacher controlled.

Return on Investment

  • To be frank, ROI is difficult to measure at this point in an academic institution, but I do find that in general, online students respond well to seeing and hearing an instructor's face and voice. This has probably helped improve student evaluations in my online classes, would be a metric that most higher ed instructors would be concerned with.
  • I suppose a negative impact would be time investment. However this can be mitigated by re-using materials when appropriate.
  • My use this quarter has involved editing pre-existing lectures. I've been able to shorted several lectures and I've been able to break up one lecture that was way too long into two smaller, more modular lectures. This has helped improve the class without forcing me to re-record the same lecture.

  • Nearpod has a positive impact on my students because they learn while using technology vs. traditional method.
  • My students' scores have improved ever since I've started implementing the consistent use of Nearpod.
  • I cherish the fact that the teacher is in control but the activities are all student centered and fully engages them.
