Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate can open up the door to eLearning, but it is not quite as intuitive as I would have liked to see. There is a lot of support for Adobe Captivate, but it must be constantly sought out on specific topics. The integration of Adobe Stock and Assets gives Captivate a strong push.

Cons

  • The learning curve for adding and manipulation effects can be quite steep. If I haven't used Captivate in a while, it takes several minutes to remember how things work.
  • Audio editing could be improved by making it easier to place edit markers without having to pause the play cursor at a given spot.
  • Recording new audio or video to an existing presentation makes my Captivate crash. I've had to record audio in a separate program and import as media. Fixing this bug would be very helpful.

  • The investment for many courses may exceed what some companies can budget.
  • The app should be in better sync with the website; furthermore, sometimes the UI is slow and sluggish.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

Usability

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

Support

Every issue I have ever had was handled with care and quite thoroughly. After the initial conversation on the phone, I received frequent emails letting me know what they were working on, and also received follow up phone calls. After I found the resolution, I got one more call to ensure everything was working properly. The follow up was quite surprising.

Alternatives Considered

Although Articulate Storyline is more user friendly, Adobe Captivate has more functionality and options to choose from when designing an eLearning course. Articulate Storyline's interface is similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, so if you have experience with that program, Storyline should come as a Breeze. However, you are limited by all of the things you may wish to do when creating your eLearning course, which is why we chose Captivate instead.

Udemy for Business is a competent alternative to other business education tools on the market, it provides applicable content that enables users to study at their own pace. Some areas they can improve: adding engaging videos for learning, and a badge that can be placed on users LinkedIn account after they have been certified for a particular skill or topic

Return on Investment

  • We recently stopped using a vendor-supplied Security Awareness training and created our own in Captivate. Doing so saved our organization $15,000 per year.
  • We are looking to stop using other vendor-supplied training that will save us an additional $45,000 per year.
  • Adobe Captviate's subscription program is the way to go. For roughly $40 per month, we are able to use Captivate and receive all enhancements they release.

  • We can not quantify ROI from a pure revenue standpoint; however, we have seen employees taking a more proactive approach to their career by engaging with the tool.
