Adobe Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro is especially helpful for those with a basic knowledge of video creation, who want to make professional grade video content without having to rely on an agency. As someone who does marketing for the companies I work for, as well as occasionally freelancing, I find that Premiere Pro really fits my needs nicely. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it for someone just starting out in editing, at least not without some additional learning first.

This is an exceptional product for anyone looking to make, edit and distribute videos demonstrating software or making webinar-like videos for presenting your ideas. If you work on a Mac, this is a great, easy to learn app. Unfortunately, it is currently not available for PC or for tablets like the iPad.

Pros

  • It's an all-encompassing platform for video content creators. I've never needed come across a time where I needed a feature present and it wasn't there.
  • Premiere pro's ability to easily edit not only video but audio in many capacities is especially helpful. It's nice not to have to go into Audition for slight audio changes.
  • The quality of videos produced in Premiere, even by non-professionals is very impressive. It's very possible to create professional commercial grade promotions with this program.

  • Ease of use - the interface is very intuitive
  • Versatility - the ability to simultaneously record from multiple sources
  • Easy to export - the finished product can be saved as a file, emailed, or posted to online platforms like YouTube

Cons

  • All those features are a bit of a double-edged sword. As is frequently a criticism with Adobe products, the learning curve is steep. But that's the nature of the beast with professional-level software.
  • There have been many times when I've gone to tweak the volume levels of a clip or a track using keyframes, only to find that some setting has disabled keyframes for audio tracks. This has resulted in needing to search online for a way to re-enable the keyframes. It's not a bug -- this is a clear choice by Adobe as they want to help make sure you don't make dumb mistakes after having invested a lot of time in a complex project, but I have still found it annoying.
  • One of the pros (flexibility in organization) can also be a con -- I would love to see Adobe encourage MORE organization right from the start, as often I'll start a project and then realize "Oh my goodness, I have to do a ton of cleanup here in order to keep 100's of files straight."

  • It works only on the Mac OS platform, not on PC
  • There is no iOS version; it must be used on a Mac OS laptop or desktop

Alternatives Considered

Camtasia is great for screen-recording and beginner video editing. It is a powerful tool that I recommend to several colleagues. However, it does not have the same robust functionality as Premiere Pro for special effects, sound quality, and color correction.

While Final Cut Pro X is definitely more full-featured, the learning curve is also considerably steeper. Also, as far as I can tell, Final Cut does not have the built-in capability to record my computer screen. If you are a hardcore video editor, Final Cut is the way to go. If, however, you are looking to produce professional-quality screencasts for educational purposes, Screenflow is the better choice.

Return on Investment

  • Outsourcing video editing is very expensive. We have saved tens of thousands of dollars by doing some of our editing in-house. Especially for training materials that are internal facing.
  • Once a user is familiar with Premiere Pro, time required to create a quality video is lowered.
  • When combined with other Adobe Creative Cloud products, the quality of videos has increased.

  • This allows me to make a presentation once and then distribute it widely. This increases efficiency and effectiveness.
  • It allows me to demonstrate apps and concepts, not just talk about them. This allows clients to grasp concepts much more readily.
