Aha!

  • Aha! is the all around product management tool. You need something once you build out a product management role and grow beyond a small scrum team with one or two products. JIRA, Pivotal, and project management tools don't cut it for aligning [engineering] with product initiatives once the backlog starts to scale.
  • On the other hand, there are several unfinished features that my peers all admit to having to work around: Capacity Planning, Salesforce Integration, Roadmap Display Flexibility, User Feedback, etc. This year has been all about reporting in terms of feature releases. As Aha! grows, they will fill in these other areas, so stay tuned.

Pros

  • Product road-mapping is best in Aha!
  • The types of boards it has gives flexibility to every kind of product managers.
  • It has various matrices to make the foundation for a good PRD.

  • Creating a Work Breakdown Structure. It is easy and fast. Then, using the Gantt Pro tool, one can manage the project and assign resources and dates to work packages.
  • MindManager's drag and drop functionality offers the possibility of combining multiple projects into one program and can even help you perform resource leveling across multiple projects.
  • Stakeholder Management. MindManager has many built-in templates but one I like to use if the Stakeholder identification template. It makes identifying, classifying, and managing stakeholders as easy as it gets.
  • Brainstorming. There is nothing as convenient as a mind map tool for simple brainstorming of ideas. Mindmanager excels at this.
  • Turning a map into a written document. I used MindManager to brainstorm, plan and compose an entire white paper, complete with graphics. Then, all I had to do was export the document to MS Word. Formatting was all taken care of.

Cons

  • Bug tracking needs to be improvised, JIRA has upper hand in this.
  • Notes section can be improved as we found less flexibility in Notes.
  • The integration of Tech team to use Aha! needs to be strengthened. As of now, Tech is reliable on project tracking software rather than Aha!

  • If it had a more comprehensive project management capability that allowed for a complete replacement of MS Project, that would be great.
  • Better integration with Evernote; my other productivity tool.
  • Updates to the old cloud-based Mindjet Files feature at vision.mindjet.com that I first purchased in 2012 would be greatly appreciated. If I am using a client's computer without MindManager, I want to be able to access and render newer format files seamlessly. This would involved continued support for Flash Player, but I think it is warranted.

MindManager is a critical part of how I operate and would be set back if I no longer had access to this program.

Support always answered in 24 hours for any inquiry-- a reasonable timeframe for most of our requests. The PM team participated actively in supporting their features, keeping them close to the product.

Alternatives Considered

In terms of product road-mapping, Aha! beats its competitors upfront. Aha! is one of the best tool to visualize your product strategy. However, JIRA in terms of PRDs, gives a complete environment in its own. Aha! is for product managers only. If Tech needs to be involved, JIRA can be used or Trello if your organization is small. On the other hand, Aha! is for all sized companies.

I chose MindManager because of its ease of use and ability to work across Mac OS and Windows

Return on Investment

  • It has helped us improve our product lifecycle communication. We have less wasted time spent figuring out where the project is and what it's waiting on. This has helped departments further down the project better use their time so they're already aligned with what's happening rather than waiting for a handoff.
  • Aha! has helped include our customers more in our product planning and especially in our bug fixes and new feature roadmaps.
  • Aha! has improved our strategy meetings or roundup discussions by storing everything in one place. They're shorter and more focused.

  • Time Savings- MindManager has allowed us to save time by removing redundancy. We can now share notes in a single map. I estimate that we have saved 25% by sharing information in a single location.
  • Quality Improvement- Prior to MindManager, I would open PowerPoint or pull out sticky notes to start building a presentation. Now, I start with MindManager and start brainstorming on objective of the presentation, expectations of the audience, topics to cover, and visuals to add. I know the flow and effectiveness of my presentations has improved because I have seen the feedback.
