Alteryx

It is very well suited for anyone who is manipulating data, doing analysis. It is especially good for teams who have a hard coding deficit - (lacking experienced SQL, Python, etc.) programmers but have people who are generally familiar with coding as they can be trained to be extremely productive fairly quickly. Especially good for experienced analysts with statistics and light programming backgrounds to work their way up to data scientists. It is also good for experienced data scientists who are tired of writing code. I quadrupled or better my productivity when I stopped writing SAS code and started using Alteryx.

Denodo

Donodo is very well suited for large organizations with siloed datasets. Denodo thrives in these environments, since large organizations can afford the licensing costs, and are always tasked to mash up data from multiple environments throughout the organization.

Pros

Alteryx

  • It has a very intuitive interface
  • It enables working with very large data sets
  • It is a really useful tool for data preparation work to pilot and design dashboards
  • It is easy to explain the data processing workflow to your colleagues
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Denodo

  • Flat learning curve.
  • Does not need brilliant developers.
  • Less need for custom denodo wrappers, even if needed is not very complex.
  • Denodo stored procedures and functions helped address complex, not straightforward requirements.
  • Export/import deployment between environments was very helpful.

Cons

Alteryx

  • It is very hard to scroll within a workflow--it goes from slow to fast and no medium speed.
  • I would love a feature to "pop out" the workflow to view in a full size window.
  • Sometimes there are errors in the workflow that appear out of nowhere and resolve themselves. But it can cause the workflow to error out.

Denodo

  • Lack of Documentation and user community: Denodo continues to have a small community of super users, therefore there is not a lot of documentation out there in the event you get stuck.
  • Cost: Data virtualization isn't cheap, so smaller organizations might shy away from this technology due to the high licensing costs.
  • Caching strategy: Some slower datasets will require caching... which argues, why not just do traditional ETL if you need to do this?

We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

Usability

Alteryx is super easy to pick up and use. Almost every functionality is super intuitive and anyone with an understanding of data would be able to master it in a short time. The only thing that is holding it back from a perfect 10 is that some of the very advanced features like Macros and Analytic apps can get confusing, specifically when dealing with user input.

Denodo is very easy to use. It has a user-friendly drag and drop interface. I'm not a fan of the java platform it resides on.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Denodo is a tool to rapidly mash data sources together and create meaningful datasets. It does have its downfalls though. When you create larger, more complex datasets, you will most likely need to cache your datasets, regardless of how proper your joins are set up. Since DV takes data from multiple environments, you are taxing the corporate network, so you need to be conscious of how much data you are sending through the network and truly understand how and when to join datasets due to this.

The support used to be much more hands-on and responsive back in the day before they grew to what they are now. It was very common to work with engineers directly to resolve stubborn problems with the interface. Now, you just get front-line support reps who, while nice, really can't solve a lot of the issues that come up [in my opinion].

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

They are like Alteryx, but they are not Alteryx.KNIME is free but facing and causes more confusion.Tableau Prep can do some work but [is] not as powerful as Alteryx, and Prep is not free.

Denodo

I did not use any other data virtualization platform. BizTalk is not the right comparison; it is an integration layer and for orchestration; do not use denodo as an orchestration layer, it is not for connecting upstreams to downstreams and orchestrate data flows, it is primarily for pulling information and presenting in a fashion that benefit the audience

Return on Investment

Alteryx

  • Alteryx does an excellent job of integrating consumer and spatial data to calculate and visualize things like locations within a certain drive-time radius.
  • For visualization purposes I had to move the data to excel for some decent graphs.
  • It can become very expensive.

Denodo

  • Improved time-to-market. We addressed new requirements in less than 2 person days.
  • Very agile. Easy to handle changing requirements. Like a new requirement, a change in requirement was not expensive either.
  • Platform issues were difficult to diagnose and debug.
