Altru

Altru shines in capturing constituent data. If you are looking for a product to collect user info and their use patterns then this database works. The challenge is getting the data out in a format usable for decision making and application. Reporting can be a bear. The preloaded key performance indicators and reports are useful but may not fit your need. Every institution is different, and every department has different needs. This product tries to bridge the gaps to create communication between areas, but at a cost. This will not serve any of the departments at 100% of what is wanted out of a database. Altru is a whole institution choice for the benefit of cross-department collaboration.

Luminate CRM and Analytics

If you want a "one size fits all" aka one platform to do most things, especially if your company is advocacy or grassroots donation based, then this is a better product for you. Our business is neither but we've managed to customize it over time to fit our donor needs with the various Luminate Online tools.

Pros

  • Combines multiple departments' data under "one roof".
  • Interface is relatively easy to learn for basic tasks (e.g. daily sales) and query can be used for more complex interests.
  • Support team is very knowledgeable and readily available; the Altru Community is full of other users who can also help you through your specific question or issue.

  • Multiple tools on one platform. It saves time and lowers chances of error since we don't have to switch between a lot of platforms. Many less tech savy admins appreciate one login for everything.
  • We use our events calendar for many things, and the tools are fairly specialized for a more modern and easy to browse web calendar (having mobile optimized wrappers make all the difference).
  • Email campaigns can be segmented and more carefully targeted, both through ab testing and their reports.

Cons

  • We'd love to see more reports available. I initially spent a lot of time building queries to get the information we needed, and we often use queries for regular reporting.
  • We do not use Altru for volunteer management because of its limited functionality.
  • We've run into some software issues not limited to our organization, but these have been resolved in a timely manner.

  • Email campaigns - as much as we like and use them, Luminate Online's admin experience is not as new and sleek as other email marketing software. Unlike Mailchimp and Emma, you have to do everything in a wysiwyg template, which relies heavily on the tech experience of the admin user. In a nonprofit setting such users are harder to come by.
  • Usability for admins. Many of our admins complain about the clunkiness of the program compared to other systems they use. So while they prefer having all tools "under one umbrella" they'd prefer for these tools to be more optimized in a modern workplace.
  • Any additional services get very expensive. We've been with LO for awhile so overtime have gotten more customized parts of it that make our digital marketing more relevant (such as mobile friendly templates). But these did not come cheap and all additional services not contracted are often expensive. At times we've been hit with huge fees without any warning from our customer success reps.

Altru is the only complete, all-in-one solution that meets the RISD Museum's business needs.

Both MailChimp and Salesforce were sleeker and had a better admin experience (as well as constituent experience on the end) but both programs were more expensive than we could afford when we put all the digital tools we needed together. We ended up valuing LO more because it could do everything in one.
