Chartio (discontinued)

Chartio is a great tool for building presentable dashboards. It can export, you can add read-only access, and it has permissions levels by dashboard for users. There are other data analysis tools that help to analyze the data, but few allow for such a nice presentation

Good: Source data is clean and well prepared. Can easily and quickly build front-end visualisations to inform end users.Good: Desktop/large-screen users.Bad: Source data is not as clean. Is possible, although not so easy, to clean/transform source data (using the data load editor); so data is easily consumed by the front-end visualisations.Bad: Small-screen/laptop/handheld-device users.Bad: The security rules (restricting who can see what) are not intuitive - difficult to set up.

Pros

Chartio (discontinued)

  • Direct linkage to our databases. Abstracts away the visualization layer so we can focus on the data and the queries.
  • Host of graphs and tools that permits all types of data visualizations.
  • Haven't quite used this yet, but there is a new embedding feature that will be very helpful so that we can embed the charts into a company central dash.

Qlik Sense

  • Centrally deployed guided analytics apps and dashboards.
  • Custom and embedded analytics.
  • We like the enhancements that Qlik has done over the years starting from QlikView to Qlik Sense to QlikInsights. Our users have embraced the use of Reports and Dashboards that we have been able to provide with Qlik.

Cons

Chartio (discontinued)

  • There is not a last full month date range option. You can still get the range that you need, but the dashboards will have to be manually updated to exclusively display one whole month.
  • When building a chart, the area which displays your tables and fields is finite. You can't adjust the size to make it easier to see. They do allow a mouse-over to see the entire name of your table/field, but I would prefer to adjust the width.
  • Once you modify a query in the Custom Query tab, there doesn't seem to be a way to go back to using the U.I.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Qlik Sense

  • The system by which the various streams and apps is very rigid; they need to introduce the ability to move things around, add sub-folders, etc. It gets cluttered very quickly when you have a lot of apps.
  • There are often seemingly basic functionality on charts and tables etc. that just can't be done; an example would be having multiple measures on a chart with multiple dimensions. Right now you can only have one measure if you have more than one dimension. There are lots of other examples like this..
  • Sometimes basic things are very inflexible and needlessly complicated; an example being changing the colors of a dimension in a chart. Right now you either have to use the color scheme the system sets, or write a formula to define the color explicitly for every dimension value. There should be some middle ground where you can have them apply a color scheme, then chose to edit the scheme they apply visually.
  • One big limitation is using custom measures and dimensions within other measures and dimensions. The ability create a custom (master) dimension is great, but you can only use that as an explicit field, you can't reference that master dimension in a formula anywhere.

Great customer support: You will receive an answer by email usually within 20-30 minutes. Not only that but our CSMs for Chartio go out of their way to help, they have even created charts for some of the less experienced users that wanted an example to work from. We have had nothing but great experiences with this team.

I really like using Chartio. I use it on a daily basis for pulling data from different sources and combining data (the explore tab was a great idea for this use). I think I would give it 8/10 because there needs to be more documentation or maybe blog posts about things people are doing with it. I only have my own ideas about what to do /how to graph things. I know there are some articles, but it would be awesome to have a section on the neat dashboards people are building or how they show data in different ways. Another complaint is how much time it takes to load. I know our databases aren't set up precisely for Chartio and I have been creating data stores. But the data stores have so many more limitations that adds a whole new layer of frustration. Love the product, keep up the good work and the fast fixes.

Standard user interface and powerful analytic functions is GREAT.As technical person working in the background there are more things to do to make this a completely great tool. Some functions that should be standard requires consult scripting and hours. Now we are using it quite advanced and with many servers and in combination with QlikView. So overall I love the tool. But it could be better and user friendly and powerful in the background

Qlik is available when we need it. The only issue we experience is memory on the server, Qlik is very memory hungry and if you loads lots of data having enough memory to support the dataset is important. This needs to be taken into consideration as performance issue occur if you don't

Not only can you ask the support team for help, but you can also ask the community. Also with the community there is a vast amount of problems that have already been solved. The problem you are encountering has a likely chance of already being discussed and even solved in the community section saving you time from reaching out.

I use self learning materials. Pretty helpful. I find myself having to go back to the "drilldown" instructions though, and have a hard time finding hidden variables on a dashboard, so perhaps there is room for intuitive improvements (or maybe I'm just being lazy)

Qlik delivered on its promises and has been key to supporting the new world we live in . If we hadn't chosen Qlik sense when we did life would have been harder and our organisation wouldn't have been able to mange the CoVid-19 pandemic the way we have . We live in a data led world and Qlik does that for us.

Alternatives Considered

Chartio so far has been the easiest BI tool to setup and has also been the most affordable. There are some other, great, BI tools out there but they were a bit to heavy handed for what we needed. Also - despite the high cost per user in Chartio, the other tools were still more expensive.

Qlik Sense, Tableau, Power BI and Looker are all great tools that will cover and add value to virtually every organization. They are a bit different and the decision of selecting one and not other can reside in the particular needs of each case. Qlik Sense integration with NPrinting, adding the capability of sending highly customized offline reports in addition to online data exploration it was a most in our case.

Chartio has worked well as our datawarehouse has rapidly expanded, and the usability/performance hasn't seemed to have suffered. What we haven't yet realized is additional savings from additional users. We have some dashboard needs for users who truly just view of a few charts, and the licensing structure hasn't yet been structured in a way that would support that type of approach...having 50 "core" licenses, and then potentially several hundred view only licenses for partners that would use the application infrequently.

  • Qlik has allowed me to highlight areas in expense reporting that need correction. This information is shared with managers to take corrective action with their direct reports to improve accuracy and completeness in expenses.
  • Using Qlik to correct behavior in expense reporting has save time in fixing errors in those expense reports that need remediation by reducing the number of reports that need to be addressed.
  • The risk of fines and reputational harm that could result in inaccurate federal disclosures is reduced through using the tool to identify areas where employees need additional training with expense reporting.
