Azure App Service

If you are a large organization where you have a lot of traffics, Azure is good for you. If your scenario is something like, you sometimes have high traffic, and sometimes low traffic, and you got enough money, Azure is good for scaling up to your need. Azure is definitely not for you if your budget is low. Not suitable for low budget people AT ALL.

HostGator

HostGator for email, domain and website hosting--delightful, 100% satisfied! Have always had ample capacity for company email needs, features work well. I have used it off and on for several organizations since 2011. HostGator website building is fairly straightforward, although I wouldn't recommend it for first-time web designing. The pluses on the HostGator website builder: great-looking themes, adequate webpage capacity, really cool scrolling capabilities, which trends well now. Easier than building a WordPress website from scratch, which can also be done for free in HostGator. I'd say it's limited compared to feature-rich WP, but it designs as nicely as Wix.

Pros

Azure App Service

  • It has options to deploy using CI/CD.
  • It has great integration with Azure Devops
  • It has all the common runtimes, so we don't need to install softwares.

HostGator

  • The pricing is a big feature for this hosting company
  • Every three years when the hosting contract is coming to an end, they offer a reduced fee to upgrade your server plan, which is more cost effective than renewing at the regular rate for whatever plan you're currently using.
  • The customer service workers are professional and friendly.

Cons

Azure App Service

  • Jumps between resource sizes can get expensive
  • You may wind up putting a lot of eggs in one basket--not necessarily a con but something to keep in mind (most of your data will likely be managed and processed through Microsoft products/services if you fully commit to Azure App Service).
  • Learning new technology. If you're moving from on-premises to Azure App Service (or any cloud solutions), you'll likely have to rethink how things are done to achieve the same end results (and/or resources may become expensive quickly).

HostGator

  • Support could be better, it takes a long time to connect with somebody
  • You need to pay extra for a backup you can rely on
  • SiteLock is sold separately, but did not help when we were hacked
  • Site seems to slow down from time to time

Because we have in house technical support to compensate the lack of quality HostGator tech support, and because the price continues to be affordable the business is likely to continue using HostGator. They provide what the business needs and we have in house support to maintain it.

I give the Azure App Service support an 8 instead of a 10 because there are time when it is easier to google a problem and find an answer than it is to use the learning library to find an answer. I would say the universe of user group members willing to offer suggestions is amazing.

While you will get support from HostGator, it seems to be a different level from 8-10 years ago. It may take 15-20 minutes to get someone on chat, and unless you follow up, I've found followup email support to take a couple of days. If you stick with it, though, you will get support, and I've never had a problem they couldn't help with.

Alternatives Considered

Azure App Service

Azure App Service will give you a very solid and strong platform to deploy your applications. It gives you great interfaces to manage those applications either through a Web Portal or the Azure command-line interface. However, I consider Azure overall to be very complex and hard for newcomers to use it right away. I would consider Heroku first due to its extremely simple interface and abstraction of computing units.

HostGator

HostGator is packed with much more features than our previous web hosts, and They had a lot of positive reviews. One of the reasons we selected them over some of the others was that even though they were WordPress-friendly, they still allowed us access to more complex features such as the ability to edit our own databases. Bluehost was much too simple.

Return on Investment

Azure App Service

  • It's difficult to find the right APP because one software has number of apps so there's no way to find the official version of an app, so sometimes we need to install APP then find out which is performing well.
  • Little expensive.

HostGator

  • Usage of resale options easily quadrupled the money I was spending on HostGator
  • Trust in the host has to be earned, and HostGator has not retained that for me -- it will be a while before I feel confident in their uptime again
  • Overall, HG has been a positive impact on my business as a web developer
