Likelihood to Recommend

Bitbucket

Bitbucket is particularly well suited for teams that need to collaborate on projects. I also highly recommend it for development teams that use Jira for projects and issue tracking since they integrate so nicely. It also allows for side-by-side comparison of code.Although Bitbucket does allow merging of code, the conflicts have to be manually addressed which can be time consuming. If this is something you believe your team may encounter frequently, there might be better options.

IBM Rational ClearCase

IBM Rational ClearCase might be better suited for a smaller / simpler code base. Larger code bases really slow it down... but then again there are better alternatives out there for source control

Pros

Bitbucket

  • Free private repositories for small teams - this is great to save costs relative to other options
  • They have some robust (although sometimes confusing) team and project management tools
  • They have built out many pipeline and integrations, but we did not use these

IBM Rational ClearCase

  • Rational ClearCase is excellent for handling versioning and branching. No other tool I've used has the depth that ClearCase has when it comes to handling complex branching scenarios and identifying where certain versions of particular files are within a particular configuration.
  • Rational ClearCase handles parallel development of many dependent applications really well.
  • The use of ClearCase Views to switch between projects and configurations is extremely convenient as opposed to the local workstation model of the competitors.

Cons

Bitbucket

  • While it integrates flawlessly with other Atlassian products, it's lacking in 3rd party integrates, especially compared to competitors like GitHub and GitLab
  • Using Jira for issues gives a lot of power, but it's also a lot of overhead and complexity that may or may not be necessary for your organization. It also puts issues in another tool, adding a little friction when it comes to addressing issues in your code
  • Searching for and discovering other projects and GitHub isn't quite as intuitive or easy to use as competitors

IBM Rational ClearCase

  • Extremely buggy.
  • Sometimes the repository gets locked for no reason.
  • Slow.

There isn't another similar product that I would be able to find that would meet all of these needs without me implementing my own self-hosted service locally on premises that was accessible to off-site team members. For the cost, this is one of the services that you just can't find a way to get rid of. It's incredibly affordable and incredibly beneficial.

Usability

Bitbucket

Bitbucket 8.5

The architecture of Bitbucket makes it more easily scalable than other source code management repositories. Also, administration and maintaining the instance is very easy. It integrates with JIRA and other CI/CD applications which makes it more useful to reduce the efforts. It supports multiple plugins and those bring a lot of extra functionality. It increases the overall efficiency and usefulness of Bitbucket.

Support Rating

Bitbucket

Bitbucket 8.2
Based on 15 answers
Support is very communicative about outages and provides a detailed status page with real-time and historical data. Additionally, paid subscribers have the option of raising support requests with Atlassian support that is answered quickly. Finally, users can take advantage of the support forums, where there are plenty of other users who are willing to share their experiences and help work through difficult technical issues.

Alternatives Considered

Bitbucket

We were using an older version of SVN when deciding to move away and buy Bitbucket. What we gained was: pull requests and code reviews, a nice UI, better permissions management and of course the JIRA/Bamboo integration, which made a huge impact on the software development/project tracking processes in our company, across departments.

IBM Rational ClearCase

If development is centrallized to one location and your company releases hundreds of customized versions of your software per year, then ClearCase is the best tool for managing the complexity of multiple versions of customized software. If your company has globally distributed development, then I'd recommend Team Foundation Server over ClearCase. If your organization uses Agile Methodologies, then I'd recommend TFS with GIT.

Return on Investment

Bitbucket

  • Bitbucket was inherited from an acquisition of another company - before the acquisition, it ran very well as part of the Atlassian tool suite. The entire development team was able to use Bitbucket and an agile methodology. This enabled excellent communication between development an business owners.
  • For a larger team, Bitbucket - even with the Atlassian tool suite - wasn't able to compete with the Microsoft offerings with VSTS. Ultimately we'll be discontinuing the use of Bitbucket in favor of the VSTS product.

IBM Rational ClearCase

  • Managed code versioning for many years.
  • Only one person can edit code at a time - slows processing down.
  • IBM is an expensive product to support.
