CenterPoint Payroll

CenterPoint Payroll has been excellent for our company, with approximately 150 employees. I can certainly see it being excellent for smaller companies and larger companies. I don't know if there is a size of company at which it would become difficult or limiting to use - I can't foresee any of the functions or features becoming limiting factors as company size increases. To a certain extent, I could see the robustness of CenterPoint being a bit more than what is necessary for a tiny company of less than 5 employees, but it would certainly be able to do what is required for them.

I think Namely is generally a solid solution for small companies. I am not sure how well it scales—some of the UI/navigation problems I have noticed are likely to be even more problematic at a larger organization. It works very well to manage payroll and basic employee details. The social networking component is also well done. The most problematic is performance/goal tracking. They have the right idea, it is just clunky, and we've started tracking this outside of Namely because it is just easier that way.

  • No centralized data platform which creates a ton of disparate data processes and errors
  • Does not sufficiently support the most basic employee lifecycle processes and pay practices.
  • Customer support is challenging since there seems to be a huge disconnect with the Namely teams. They don't seem to interact and work together.
  • Namely is constantly "improving" their platforms but does not always communicate the changes to customers. We're often surprised by changes in functionality.
  • Inadequate reporting for very common HR and payroll reports.

Administrators and employees love Namely. It is very easy to use and streamlined. Employees stay engaged with news feed updates and enjoy all the self service options. The time cards are very easy to access and clocking in and out for non-exempt employees is a breeze. Namely is part of our family.

Payroll is pretty user friendly and so is running payroll reports. The benefits enrollment is pretty clear and easy to understand. The details behind the benefits and what it will cost per payroll is structured so that it is clear to each user. They used to have a great support system but they recently switched to a ticketing system and it is not as user friendly

CenterPoint support is excellent! While I have not had to use them frequently, as the program is consistently stable and has few, if any, bugs, the times I have had to reach out to tech support, they have been excellent and have solved our issues quickly. They listen to our explanation of the problems, can dial into our system to see exactly what we're seeing in real time, and have always been able to quickly determine the issue, work out a solution, and help us through the process until we've got everything back in line. They are friendly, courteous, professional, kind and very knowledgeable of their products. This is absolutely one of the best things about CenterPoint - even though we seldom need it, when we do, they are always quick to get us through the issue.

Unfortunately, in more recent years we've had a lot of difficulty with Namely as they've undergone a lot of internal changes. It took 4 returned emails saying the person no longer worked at Namely to find someone to help me (I finally called payroll) and it took a while to get connected with a direct source of help. Namely now has set up their "pod" feature of communication which works well for the most part, but is different. I felt spoiled when we first started with Namely, but now it feels very much like working with most large companies' help centers. There is a system to go through and you do have the option to click "urgent". In general the help is efficient, but it still takes a few days and it's hard to speak with someone directly. It is all done via online communications and is difficult to actually speak to someone on the phone. This works well for most cases, but I do feel frustrated more often than I'd like to with this type of communication. (2019/2020)

It went smoothly, but there were many requests I had on reporting, tracking, etc that were never put into place. I would have set these things up myself but we were also never told how to do it. They ran a parallel payroll test, or said they did, but when I audited our first payroll, there was a lot wrong with it (taxes, deductions, etc) that required a ton of manual adjustments on the next payroll.

CenterPoint Payroll

We selected CenterPoint Payroll because of our dissatisfaction with ADP (and Paychex prior). We wanted a solution that we controlled internally, instead of having to be at the mercy of some huge company that saw us as a tiny fish in a big ocean. We set our company's configuration, add/define all of our own specific settings, profiles, etc. and simply process payroll. We print and sign our own checks, process our own direct deposits directly with our bank, and can handle our own business needs. When we were with ADP and Paychex before, both companies made promises to us that they simply were either unwilling or unable to fulfill. We have saved both time and money by doing our payrolls ourselves with CenterPoint.

I did not select Namely. I inherited it. My predecessors chose it because they thought it "looked good" and that employees would like it. ADP and Ultipro are both better. Namely might be fine for 50-100 per some employers, but it gets painful beyond that point.

Return on Investment

  • CenterPoint Payroll has saved us tens of thousands of dollars from our prior arrangement with ADP, while providing either similar or superior support.
  • Having payroll completely in our control has simplified a LOT of our daily routines - if something needs to be updated or adjusted, we do it ourselves instead of contacting someone at ADP and hoping that they can do it for us, then getting frustrated when they haven't.

  • Decline in reporting capability (payroll general ledger report is a nightmare every 2 weeks).
  • Product cost is way too high for services delivered. It was the worst financial investment we have made in years.
