Cloudflare

In my opinion, Cloudflare is well suited in all conditions when you need a managed DNS manager. It solves the problem with DNS Not Resolve when we often create a domain/subdomain (a software house would be like this), so we can deploy our apps as soon as possible to the client.

F5 on IBM Cloud

F5 on IBM Cloud has efficient ways to manage traffic, both local and that from the international sources. Besides, the firewall evaluations and management is handled by the program. F5 on IBM Cloud has a well designed virtual machine configuration, following both small and the largest templates for efficiency. The network configuration and monitoring is also deployed in the program.

Pros

Cloudflare

  • Security: Cloudflare keeps our website safe from DDoS attacks and other malicious traffic.
  • CDN: Cloudflare caches our website content, increasing our website's reliability and reducing server load. This saves on bandwidth costs from web servers.
  • Registrar: We can migrate domains to Cloudflare, though they don't currently allow the purchase of new domain names. The benefit of this is cheaper renewal fees and fewer systems involved in managing our domains.

Cons

Cloudflare

  • There is a huge jump in price between the mid-tier and enterprise solutions which is hard to justify for smaller businesses, or companies owning many small businesses.
  • It is difficult to convert from a CNAME installation back to a DNS based one
  • Setting up page-level caching with web workers is counterintuitive for simple websites

F5 on IBM Cloud

  • F5 on IBM Cloud is a virtual edition, which is technical.
  • The subscription fee is extensive and expensive.
  • F5 on IBM Cloud configuration process requires an expertise.

While there are some parts of the service that can be tricky to implement if you have a very custom site, like holepunching for cache, for the most part, the service works very well out of the box and is easy to use

We rarely have to call in, most issues are user error. When we do have an issue we can hop on chat or the forum to figure out why something is not working as it should. We do see the occasional issue when a hosting account is upgraded, you have to make sure you reset the DNS to the new hosting account, IP address tend to change

Alternatives Considered

Cloudflare

CloudFlare has Incapsula beat in terms of ease of use and features for their lower level plans. Incapsula only allows API use on their Enterprise plan where-as CloudFlare allows it on all plans. Both great options, but CloudFlare is by far my preferred service.

F5 on IBM Cloud

We have been using Azure Traffic Manager and Application Gateway for all our applications before this however we had to use other features such as Azure DNS, WAF, etc which was painstaking and very costly on a whole, however, all this was simplified when we started using F5 with IBM and the cost was drastically reduced for us.

Return on Investment

Cloudflare

  • The specific ROI impact for the products we use from Cloudflare is hardly directly measurable, however the costs of suffering an attack for not having DDoS protection are exponentially higher.
  • Since the implementation of a CDN, we have seen our users' stay time increased by more than 30% in the last year.
  • The impact of using Cloudflare compared to the previous provider of the same services has generated us small financial savings, by having the same service for a lower cost.

F5 on IBM Cloud

  • F5 on IBM Cloud offers a traffic report that is critical for decisions.
  • Firewall management eliminates chances of threats and destruction.
  • Network monitoring and configurations keeps us safe and monitored.
