commercetools

Commercetools is generally a very flexible, smart platform for eCommerce business. It's an API enabled, cloud solution that makes integration seamless and quick to deploy. It's also a modern platform that utilizes API query languages like GraphQl. It lacks some functionalities in pricing and geographic variations of product portfolio but the platform is constantly improving and new functionalities are added.

PrestaShop

Being a self-hosted solution, it is well suited for people who have a minimum of technical and coding knowledge. If you have no technical skills, you may need to go with other options that are hosted. Also, if you are not willing to invest in customizations and add-ons, PrestaShop would not be the best option to go with.

Pros

commercetools

  • Fully API enabled platform - There is no need to use SQL or other customization. APIs cover full range of functionalities needed for an eCommerce platform and are easy to extend.
  • Cloud solution - CommerceTools is a cloud solution so there is no back office hosting/maintenance. Simply enable the API tokens and use the platform!
  • Ever expanding - The solution contains all the necessary functions to run a successful ecommerce business and the functions are constantly expanding and new capabilities are introduced.

Cons

commercetools

  • Pricing - Commercetools has pricing limitations with respect to customer/SKU combination. If an organization provides lots of custom/contract pricing for customers, Commercetools has difficulty mapping it in. They are working on this to make it more flexible.
  • Geographic variations in product portfolio - Commercetools has central product master that doesn't provide product activation/enabling based on different geographies/elevation/sales office structures. Some creative mapping skills are needed to overcome this limitation.
  • Data mapping limitations - Commercetools lacks in out of the box data mapping limitations to full fledged ERP platforms. Extensive data mapping workshops are necessary to fit the functionalities of an ERP platform from order, to delivery , to warehouse operations and billing.

PrestaShop

  • Documentation and support needs to be updated and expanded. There's a lack of books, and the only support aside from the forum is official prestashop support, which is not cheap. The system is too massive to have such little support.
  • Too many things can go wrong with too little explanation as to why. Too much time is wasted trying to figure out why prestashop isn't working as intended because of this. Seems that most of the questions online are people fumbling around with vague issues and errors and no explanation.
  • Code should either be organized more intuitively, or there should be more help outlining what is going on during runtime for debug purposes. Why is there not a built in way to display the tpl that is being loaded in each section? I tried figuring out how to do it myself using the documentation but gave up. Instead I have to swim through the entire code to figure out how to do it myself. Should not be this complicated.
  • Too many things can go wrong when transferring or copying the website, which essentially breaks everything. Again, too little help and messages explaining why things don't work. Internet search shows that this is a common issue.

Alternatives Considered

commercetools

Commercetools is a headless commerce platform. It provides the front end functionality flexibility that competitors lack. The set of APIs can link with multiple solutions including voice enabled client solutions. The functionalities on the platform are ever expanding and limitations like pricing and product variations are addressed. The solution is very fast develop, integrate and deploy.

PrestaShop

In the past I have used Magento, which is a very popular platform, but personally it didn't sit well with me because of the complexity of the back-end and how inconvenient it was for developers. Shopify is more for a quick setup and hands-off approach. It's good for those who want a simple install with minimal involvement.

  • We were able to successfully launch the ecommerce platform in under 4 months of starting development work.
  • Integrate the same APIs to different client facing solutions.
  • The total cost of platform recovered in 8 months of deployment.
