Deltek Costpoint vs. IBM Planning Analytics

Deltek Costpoint is the most frustrating and clunkiest software I've ever used, and I've been using software for 30 years. The interface appears to have been developed before the internet and HTML and does not appear to use any modern widgets made for HTML. Every button click or menu selection requires a pause while something else loads. Our employees waste much time trying to figure out (what should be) simple tasks, and I've spoken with nobody in our company that likes the software. We've had trainings on Costpoint, but people still have issues constantly.

Ideal for large organization with complex multi-dimensional data, large budgets and dedicated administrator support. The performance of the TM1 data base is unmatched. The PAW and PAX options providing planners to work in both Excel and workspace environment. Higher Implementation efforts due to the greenfield implementations. Visualization features are not up to the mark.

• I love how you can cut a check and it opens a PDF version so it can be saved for retention at a later date if needed.
• I love how you can research vendor history different ways. It allows you to input a range or just enter one at a time.
• I also love that there are tons of reports that can be run to help with any projects.

• Customer Care - this is probably the one area that needs the most work.
• Quality Control Testing - if this area had a higher level of detail prior to releasing updates, it might mitigate the number of patches required for customers.
• Cloud Based Product doesn't work for every customer. Get multiple references before considering moving to the cloud offering.

• sometimes it is hard to produce pixel perfect reports from the Web UI. I know it is not made for this, but still, it'll be great
• getting in e.g. an Excel file just by drag and drop, and the AI should "understand" what the data is all around

The cost for our size company may be to high by the time we review, because when purchasing additional licenses on two separate occasions, only 3 months apart, there was a price increase.

Since IBM Cognos Express is suitable only for medium data warehouse environment, we are not sure if this tool solves the long term need as the business keeps growing rapidly. So its a 50/50 ratio to renew Express license. But having said that, the components of IBM Cognos Express are also available in other Cognos BI suites like Cognos 10.x version. So we will probably upgrade our environment to IBM Cognos 10.x which comes with more new features.

For what we mainly use Deltek for it is a great system. The cost for licenses can become an issue because as a growing company we are in need of licenses from time to time and the process is very cumbersome.

IBM Planning Analytics is generally good in terms of functionalities. It can be used reduce time for budget planning, resource planning, demand forecasting, etc. The performance of IBM Planning Analytics is acceptable, but user interface can be improved. It would be good to see new features that allow users to customise the dashboard.

The software is so huge and clunky that I wouldn't know how to ask for support. Here is my example of support needed: "Hello, I'm filling out my timesheet like I have been doing every day for years, and suddenly this error message came up that says "Error: 6HX7: PLC not available". I just made that up as an example of the cryptic error messages, but what is that telling me?

IBM support has been very quick to respond and handle the very few issues we've had. We've had a third-party who partners with IBM to be our consulting team which has helped greatly reduce the need for us to contact IBM directly. I highly recommend researching and selecting a well-respected partner to help with an implementation as well as ongoing support as needed.

It would be great if there were better training documents that could be downloaded without having to go through the DLZ.

• Deltek Costpoint was able to provide a few more dimensions than ADP and is better prepared for larger international integration.
• DATABASICS can meet our dimension needs and provide the same services as Deltek Costpoint at a much lower cost.

For strong technical teams and flexibility IBM Planning Analytics is the way to go. For quicker adoption and less technical teams Anaplan is the best option. If consolidation, financials, and moving from legacy tools are main focus than OneStream will be a really good choice. If deeply invested into SAP already than the SAP BPC will be the best fit to maintain the investment.

• Automate direct data connections to multiple data sources
• One secured version of the the truth (for data and formulas)
• Ability to scale to much more detailed planning with option to create predictive forecasts at detail
• Business user friendly with powerful Excel integration
• Very flexible and powerful modeling, can handle custom modeling needs at scale
• Can make the same data available across finance and ops, but at the level of details and timeline that makes sense for them
