If your team uses only Macs, then I suggest investigating Daylite 6, which is cloud-based. We've found upgrades to be tricky, sometimes users have difficulty connecting to the data-base on the main user's Daylite Server. My opinion is that it would be easier to begin fresh with 6 than upgrading and moving our current Daylite Server to the cloud. And there's no going back, once you move to the cloud, you're committed.

Slack

When there's a team that spans time zones and continents, Slack is the perfect tool for communication & collaboration. It houses a workplace directory, so any employee can be searched for by name. Sending a direct message to any individual in the company is as simple as finding their name, then typing a message & hitting send! Essentially, it's a hub for all communication -- individual, team, and company-wide announcements can be quickly & easily disseminated using Slack.

Pros

Daylite

  • Integrates with Mac Mail to automatically catalog email exchanges with both individuals and companies.
  • Allows for robust customization to meet the specific information needs of my company
  • Acts as a hub for daily activities and tasks

Slack

  • Slack is a solid chat tool that works across a variety of platforms, with a very low barrier for entry: new users can be invited via email, and can use web-based, desktop, or mobile versions of the application.
  • Slack has really captured the zeitgeist of digital culture, including strong support for customizing look and feel (including custom emojis), and a plethora of integrations with popular web-based tools, including Pivotal Tracker and GitHub on the productive side, and Giphy.com on the fun side.
  • Slack continues to refine and improve their product, with new features being rolled out just about every month.
  • Slack offers a great value in their free version of the app, with most of the tool's functionality available for no cost.

Cons

Daylite

  • I still do not use the Project part as much as I could do, even if I tried several times. I think some improvements could be done with the interface, in order to make it more intuitive.
  • The software is intented to be used with a US/Canada logic. It would be nice to be able to organize fields in the contacts in a different way, more logical to the different countries it is used in. Each country puts zip codes in different place for example.
  • It would also be nice to have the possibility to assign a contact to several categories, and to create sub-categories.

Slack

  • The sorting of channels - it's a bit confusing, could be better sorted, it would make it easier to search and make it more agile.
  • Search - It could also improve, it is not bad, but in some cases (rare) it is difficult to find the term that you want.
  • Heavy performance in other operating systems - At least in Linux, Slack seems to do a little more machine performance than when it is used on a computer running Windows.

We've been thoroughly impressed and hence will renew the application for sure as it's meeting and at times exceeding our exceptions in getting things done. A surely shot application that is recommended for a startup, a small company and also very large enterprise and also for multiple open source projects.
Given the points stated, it's a renew for us.

Everything just works. I think the navigation and usability is quite intuitive. I have never had to look up any information or google how to use a feature of Slack (both in the desktop form and on the mobile app). I've never heard any complaints from our other employees either. I have been asked to remind people how to set up reminders, ironically. Although that itself is really simple too (you type "/remind" and then the reminder details).

I don't need to be very technical to use the Slack or to integrate tools into Slack. Adding an app (integration) is seamless and the platform walks me through the process. I can communicate with my colleagues quickly either with chat or by using the call feature to phone them. If I ever have a product question, I can quickly go to one of our product channels and search for related questions or pose a question that our experts monitor. These features have made me more effective in my day and in managing my customer base

Alternatives Considered

Daylite

As noted earlier, we're abandoning Daylite and moving to another project management system that a. allows both Mac and PC users b. is cloud-based. We think we could benefit with an company-wide system, and Daylite 6 won't fit the bill. Our group is currently vetting different products, and Teamwork is the top of our list.

Slack

Atlassian actually ended up shutting down HipChat and partnering with Slack, but these are areas in which I think Slack outperformed HipChat:
  • Better UX
  • Ability to edit messages once they've been sent
  • More functionalities and integrations with different tools
  • Ability to share channels with other organizations
  • Better mobile app
  • Dark mode

Return on Investment

Daylite

  • It absolutely keeps me informed on my client interactions
  • Centralizes my tasks and to-dos
  • Integrates nicely with LinkedIn for greater reach and deeper information.

Slack

  • I believe this has increased productivity amongst the team in that we can get immediate responses to issues and questions, allowing us to have a better continuous flow of work
  • Having an easy to use tool like this speeds up on boarding, as new team members can easily learn. They also will have access to all existing resources within the tool
  • We have been able to customize communication groups to include those appropriate, eliminating unnecessary noise regarding areas not relevant to particular team members.
