Handshake

[Handshake] has all the basic functionality we would want but lacks an easy to use interface and since it is not widely used means that we end up having to use a different interview management system for each college rather than being able to just rely on a single widely used system.

Indeed

[Indeed.com] is a very helpful tool for recruitment. Just about every posting receives several candidates. Whenever the candidate pool is unqualified, it is easy to add more requirements or questions to knock those candidates out. There are several options to describe what kind of job you are advertising for. It is my favorite recruitment website.

Pros

Handshake

  • I like that I can target specific schools.
  • I like that I can interact with the university's career department to improve my listing, get feedback, and have them help promote internally.

Indeed

  • The best free job advertising platform out there that is easy to use and integrates with our ATS Greenhouse
  • ATS (Greenhouse) automatically posts every job to Indeed and requires zero effort
  • Formatting of the the jobs from my ATS look good when "pulled" over to Indeed
  • Able to integrate questions with rules that allow you to shortlist candidates in a more timely fashion
  • Sponsoring portal has change a couple times. I do not love the new format as of 5/2021 but it is not bad.
  • They allow you to use a credit card for sponsoring which linkedin will not
  • Sponsoring criteria is good and has many options

Cons

Handshake

  • From an employer perspective, it is very difficult to navigate and just has a horrible interface.
  • I can send messages but can't tell if they're received or seen. For instance, if a college declines to post a job and I ask why, I usually just hear no reply. I'm not sure why but maybe they don't see it?
  • When I receive an application, it doesn't tell me what school it's from so if I have a job posted to twenty colleges, I have to scroll them all, find it, make sure it's not a duplicate, and then review. It's tedious.
  • There are multiple users in my company who set up the account and used their local office information as opposed to HQ information and I'm unable to change it.

Indeed

  • Indeed.com tends to have a lot of fake listings or listings which overstate a role and that drives some users away from using the service.
  • Indeed.com's aesthetics are a bit dated so although the web sites functions are mature they also are a bit bland....if that matters to someone.
  • They seem to try and push the sponsor (cost to you) job lists a bit strong.

Indeed is very simple to use. The interface is self-explanatory and not cluttered. I love the templates that are available to send to candidates.

Well, support was a no-go. It seems that our institution put some office guy in charge of the product and we got to call and ask questions if needed. We had some introduction training also. What really annoys me about our implementation of Handshake is that everything seemed like a kludgy work-around to get anything done.

I haven't had to use Customer Service much for Indeed.com but the few times I've had encounters they have been very nice and helpful. They ensure you are getting the most out of your money with the resources Indeed has to offer. You can speak to customer service over the phone or on a quick messenger setting on the website depending on what your style is or how easy you feel your question is.

Alternatives Considered

Handshake

Lever is more of an ATS, while Handshake is a candidate database. It is also essential to be using good ATS when you have Handshake. You can organize your candidates and not forget about any of them. I do wish that Lever and Handshake worked together so that I can automatically input people into Lever from Handshake

We used and are still currently using other job boards. Some are free of charge, some are paid services. We do not want to stop using Indeed.com since it provides up with ability to post job postings for free. This is really appreciated. We do not want to disclose names of other services.

Return on Investment

Handshake

  • ROI has been greatly improved when planning an event because knowing the number of students that plan to attend helps us to know whether or not the cost involved in creating the event is well spent.
  • The negative impact that Handshake has had on ROI is that we are a bit unsure as to whether a specific campus will be very familiar with Handshake or not. In cases when the campus is not, it implies wasted effort to reach out to non-responsive entities.
  • On the whole, it has been a great supplement to how we integrate ourselves into the world of higher-education, but, as with every platform, the fact that it is not standard practice to use it across the board means that it is still hit or miss.

Indeed

  • Higher turnover in general for the positions we have hired for from Indeed which in some instances can hinder productivity. It is important to know that when using Indeed, you are getting volume/quantity and not necessarily top-performing employees.
  • It seems like the employees found on Indeed are constantly job hunting even when currently employed.
  • For our large-scale hiring, Indeed, all in all has had a positive impact as we are always able to fill the positions due to the large pool of resumes always on hand.
