Handshake

Handshake is mostly suited for internships or entry-level positions since you can also target recent graduates. Internships can be paid or unpaid, short, long, or whatever you need. But descriptions need to be well thought out and clear, or the university may not approve it. Handshake would not be suitable, I don't think, for trying to find employees more than a year out of college. I don't think of it as a regular job posting site

SimplyHired

SimplyHired is an excellent solution for any business! It could be used as a single ATS system for small companies, and it could also be used for large companies in conjunction with their in hour ATS.

SimplyHired

Cons

Handshake

  • User roles are difficult to transfer from one company to another. I have been unable to figure out how to transfer my account to the new company page.
  • Gaining approval to join a network or company is often a slow process and can compromise the task at hand. For example, the admin of my company account had left the company and it took several weeks to absolve the issue.
  • I would like to see Handshake more visible in the social media world. Until working with a higher education company, I didn't know Handshake existed, because my university didn't use it. I think it could be more widely marketed.

SimplyHired

  • Although the sorting process is easy through SimplyHired when you check candidates to send a message, it un-checks them after the message is sent, so you have to go back through and re-check all applicants to move them. I'd like to have the candidates remain checked and highlighted after I send them a message.
  • It would be great to have messages sent out automatically once we move them into new categories.

Well, support was a no-go. It seems that our institution put some office guy in charge of the product and we got to call and ask questions if needed. We had some introduction training also. What really annoys me about our implementation of Handshake is that everything seemed like a kludgy work-around to get anything done.

I am a big fan of the services provided in SimplyHired. I have no reservations recommending this product to any HR department that is looking for new avenues to explore in attracting candidates.

Alternatives Considered

Handshake

As helpful as Handshake has been in recruitment, I do not feel as if it offers as many possible candidates as other hiring platforms. The search for specialties and specifically trained individuals is not a thorough as other platforms. It is not a first choice for recruitment, but it has provided some helpful insights and opportunities for some positions.

SimplyHired is almost neck in neck with ZipRecruiter, but overall it stands out in the number of applicants it obtains. I do think that trends come and go, and there could come a time when ZipRecruiter is the best place for applicants, but until we see a decline on SimplyHired, we don't plan to invest elsewhere.

Handshake

  • Since the job description has to usually be approved by someone at the university, their feedback has helped me develop a more clear and thorough listing.
  • I have received some great candidates through Handshake that have gone on to become interns I've kept in touch with after leaving.

  • The job post-to-hire time is quite less which helps in effective time management and filling up the position in a timely manner.
  • The candidate search options, almost always gives us the best fit for the open position. Thus, we do not have to spend more time filling up the position. This eventually helps in significant cost savings as one need not have to pay anything to any consultant to hire resources.
