In many cases it depends on the needs of the client. In some cases they might already have experience with some part of one of these products. I have not seen a product with a better line of APIs that make it easy to get a site up and running.

Magento Open Source is an excellent choice for businesses that need a highly customizable and scalable solution and (most of all) have the technical resources to support it. It's ideal for mid-to-large-sized businesses with complex product catalogs that require complete ownership and control, particularly those with complexities such as multi-country/multi-currency stores.

Oracle CX Commerce (formerly Oracle Commerce Cloud) is very well suited for B2B commerce transactions. The wonderful thing about this software is its ability to regularly update on an automatic basis, and keep up with upgrades. Oracle CX Commerce provides my organization with greater flexibility and quick integration processes. I would recommend this to any organization trying to set up their own storefront.

Pros
Adobe
  • It is very good when it comes to search engine optimization as it makes a good use of keywords and tags to improve the SEO score. It increases the chances of ranking up of the eCommerce store in the search engine rankings.
  • It makes the store in a very optimized way and despite being a very advanced system it is still very lightweight when it comes to website speed. The pages have a comparatively low loading time and a good speed.
  • It provides a lot more advance reporting features which are very helpful for businesses to do their planning.

Oracle
  • It uses an effective algorithm to provide users with product recommendations based on other products they’ve previously viewed.
  • It comes with a decent support platform, where Oracle is attentive and provides help diagnosing issues that may arise within the environment.
  • Oracle CX Commerce comes with a developer tool known as the DCU Tool, which is very helpful when it comes to pushing changes from environment to environment. The DCU Tool is also a good resource to use for source control.

Cons
Adobe
  • Magento is not easy for a layman who is not tech-savvy to manage the website.
  • Magento is one of the only modern shopping carts in which one must manually clear the cache and "reindex".
  • Magneto has a lot of technical glitches - more than most of the other shopping carts we work with. Most are minor.

  • Customer experience - Oracle CX is already a leader and I bet they'll make it even better surpassing all expectations.
  • They've [been] the best eCommerce model solution for any kind of business at least for book publishing and logistics management - thus can't complain here either.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Oracle Commerce Cloud is definitely not my favorite platform to use, however our company has gotten very comfortable with the way our website operates using it so I do not see us switching to a different product any time soon. Over time, I’ve grown to have a love/hate relationship with this product, but as I learn more about what it offers I come to appreciate its functionality more

Usability

Magento has a relly step learning curve. This means that you need to find experienced developers who can lead junior ones, otherwise the overall development process can be a disaster. However, once you are comfortable in developing on the platform, the customization capability are basically limitless and you can adapt the platform to any use case you can imagine. Also, there are many alredy developed marketplace modules that can solve, out of the box, many problems you may face.

In looking at a different platform to migrate to from Magento 1, we looked primarily at Big Commerce, Shopify and Shopify Plus. Our host was very negative about Magento 2, but we determined after a couple years it was due to the fact it had even more complexity (and very different) than Magento 1. Shopify Plus was attractive, but the cost factor for two sites led us back to Magento 2.

The upgrade cycle of OCC and the subscription model ensure we are always on the latest and greatest version of the platform. The responsive design makes it easier for small departments to provide an optimum mobile experience. The stability of the platform is far superior to our on-prem solution.

Return on Investment
Adobe
  • Better Total Cost of Ownership than bespoke e-commerce solutions due to being open source and the wide range of free/commercial extensions available to extend the platform.
  • Often more extensive to set up and maintain than other open source alternatives, such as WooCommerce.

  • We were able to drive sales for one of our clients up by 50% over the course of a 6 month window by revamping their online web store with Oracle ATG.
  • Sharing data and communication improved greatly between legal/finance and marketing.
