Tableau Server is awesome for creating easy to understand visualizations for busy executives. An analyst can be up and running with some cool visualizations fairly quickly. But, if you're thinking of using Tableau Server for real machine learning, this is not the tool.

Pros

MicroStrategy Analytics

  • MicroStrategy was a helpful tool for providing daily, monthly, and quarterly reporting due to the ability to build automated reports that can be sent to large groups of people using distribution lists.
  • I found MicroStrategy very helpful when putting together monthly performance reviews using the visual reporting tools. The ease with which I was able to switch from data tables to charts as a better way to tell stories about complicated data sets was particularly useful.
  • When we needed to pull user information for targeted marketing campaigns, MicroStrategy dramatically reduced the amount of time we spent tying User IDs to user activity within our DMP. In turn, we were able to leverage the data to create user segments which helped us focus our marketing spend more effectively for marketing campaigns.

Tableau Server

  • Tableau is perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing software to create beautiful visualizations that get updated in real-time. I wish this software had been around 20 years ago.
  • Tableau Server makes sharing visualizations across the organization seamless. I don't think I could do my job without it.
  • Tableau Server is used to create interactive daily reports, updated automatically and in an interactive style.

Cons

MicroStrategy Analytics

  • Perhaps it was the nature of the size of the company I previously worked for, but the amount of time it took for changes and upgrades to be implemented was a bit frustrating at times.
  • It would be incredibly helpful if users had the ability to make changes to metrics and attributes without having to rely to heavily on MicroStrategy developers, it would make the product a great deal more useful.
  • Being able to distribute rich MicroStrategy reports without sending enormous emails was problematic at times. If there was a way to let data rich reports being distributed via email live in a web environment would be a big plus for the platform.
  • Being unable to view reports on smartphones was a bit of a pain at times as well, particularly when you need to send reports to colleagues working off-site without a laptop or desktop computer available.
Toreyan Clarke profile photo

Tableau Server

  • Tableau Server is sometimes referred to as simply Microsoft Excel with a power boost. I understand the reason analysts say this. It is because the software is almost exclusively a visualization software. If you're looking for truly advanced analytics combined with cutting-edge visualization, Tableau Server isn't it.
  • Tableau Server limits the type of graphs a user can create. There are numerous workarounds for different graph types, but they are not easy to implement.
  • Tableau Server can sometimes be slow to render graphics with lots of data and calculated fields.

I think there are better tools available than MicroStrategy such as Tableau based simply on the ease of manipulating data sets and how quickly you can churn through data sets. The amount of time it takes to train people on MicroStrategy is a bit frustrating as well. I think MicroStrategy has great potential, but could be a better product overall.

It simply is used all the time by more and more people.Migrating to something else would involve lots of work and lots of training. The renewal fee being fair, it simply isn't worth migrating to a different tool for now.

Reliability and Availability

I've never had an issue with MicroStrategy not being available due to MicroStrategy application malfunction. It is very robust and only failures I've seen were due to user error or the platform the machine running the service failed some how.

Performance

MicroStrategy Analytics

MicroStrategy Analytics 10.0

Being able to customize the performance based on the business need is extremely powerful. Proper configuration and understanding of the usage pattern is key, if the technical ability of the architect is not at top level, then the product will not be configured correctly which will lead to poor performance.

While there are definitely cases where a user can do things that will make a particular worksheet or dashboard run slowly, overall the performance is extremely fast. The user experience of exploratory analysis particularly shines, there's nothing out there with the polish of Tableau.

If the staff does not know they answer they either find it out at some point, or put in a feature request. I have never been left hanging or been given an answer that is unsatisfactory to the solution. Even if there was no current solution, I was still told the logical reason and why.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

The MicroStrategy training is incredible, they have great online teachers. I was fortunate to be learning MicroStrategy while also implementing a project from scratch. This helped to solidify a lot of the concepts and be able to ask questions about real world problems in addition to class room exercises.

Implementation

MicroStrategy Analytics

MicroStrategy Analytics 8.0

Implementation is not easy, but also not difficult. With enough training on how to create a schema, and with the proper data warehouse schema the implementation can be very quick. If there are a lot of unknowns in the beginning phase of modeling, that can greatly extend the overall time taken for a fully implemented project.

Alternatives Considered

We didn't select MicroStrategy, our IT department did. The team has since moved to Tableau, which is better suited to their needs.

Tableau Server

There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

Scalability

MicroStrategy Analytics

MicroStrategy Analytics 10.0

This software is extremely scaleable, one can add more core servers which performs as a load balancing. The configurations available to manage usage patterns and daily activity are as high a caliber as any other enterprise level software. This product can be installed on both a windows and unix platform allow for integration on a budget.

Return on Investment

MicroStrategy Analytics

  • Primary source of data warehouse for all report creation makes this tool invaluable to business.
  • Report creation and save for later use makes this a tool we can go back to again and again.
  • Ability to can reports and edit allow us to analyze business and better serve our internal and external customers.

Tableau Server

  • The foundation of our business was built largely using Tableau server - the overall value that Tableau has brought is hard to quantify. A lot.
  • One challenge we've encountered is when the server has experienced interface design changes. Since we use it as a part of a larger application, even minor layout changes have a negative impact on our environment.
  • The JavaScript API is a tad limited, so we've had to do some creative programming to work around those limits.
  • The (fairly) opaque underlying database structure puts additional limitations on our ability as an OEM/reseller partner. There are several metrics that would benefit us if we had more insight/access.
