Open LMS (formerly Moodlerooms)

I currently use, talk about and promote all educators using Moodlerooms. The functionality that Moodlerooms provides is unmatched in most software. It is well suited in all educational realms. Teachers that teach all online electronic courses could use this to post assignments online, separate the classes and post a variety of assignments, tasks, and activities. Additionally, in blended situations where some students are face to face and sometimes working at home, the Moodlerooms makes it easy to education and be a hands-on teacher and a hands-on learner. Less appropriately, I find using Moodlerooms in some of the private sector industries could be tougher. Moodlerooms provides people and content management, and to use it in advertising or marketing and accounting, it could be difficult to find an easy use and function for it.

Schoology Learning

Schoology is a learning management system that is designed for K-12 schools. In my personal experience as an elementary school educator, students in grades 2-5 can easily use this LMS. However, it is not as primary friendly for our young K-1 students, who rarely use the program. At times, the program can be daunting to teaches who do feel as confident in their own tech skills, but with support, it is very usable

Pros

Open LMS (formerly Moodlerooms)

  • Something that Moddlerooms does very well is that it allows teachers to structure their online classroom as one focused curriculum.
  • Moodlerooms also allows for customization of the layout. Being able to add and remove certain functions that Moodlerooms can perform definitely helps.
  • Moodlerooms is able to add different types of activities to the rooms for increased interaction.
  • Moodlerooms provides large chat opportunities to all students that are online at the same time.

Schoology Learning

  • Brings together students, school, and parents to have access to one site.
  • Allows students to see materials, assignments, due dates in real-time. No longer need to write down the calendar from inside the classroom.
  • Allows for absent or homebound students to access materials, engage in the classroom activity, and stay current with classroom progress.

Cons

Open LMS (formerly Moodlerooms)

  • Easier to change permissions.
  • Adding the ability to tweet.
  • Decrease bandwidth to improve back end loading times.

Schoology Learning

  • A streamlining of the process could help when teachers are transitioning it. The grading area needs some help. I often have classes of over 30, and scrolling up and down to click a kid's name and then see their work is really tedious.
  • Schoology does take a lot more clicks to get things done than some other LMSs.

While we have taken time to re-evaluate our selected 1:1 devices, Schoology's impact on student learning is unquestioned. Students are able to connect with other learners, create and share products of their learning, and develop their digital fluency through their use of Schoology.

It's very easy to use Schoology. As with any LMS, it helps to learn some tips and tricks prior to getting started. But, each item is clearly indicated within the platform. If I want to add materials, it is right at the top of my screen. If I want to view the calendar, it is indicated to the right of my screen. Navigating a course and the platform is quite straightforward. Additionally, the benefit of Schoology's help center and user community makes asking and answering questions quick and easy.

Okay, 9.5. While nothing is perfect, the team at Schoology Learning and PowerSchool continues to add features and integrations to Schoology. The number of third party integrations has increased. The analytics has been greatly improved for both classroom teachers and district administration. Looking forward to the day that the Assessment feature has full feature parity with the Test/Quiz feature

Alternatives Considered

Open LMS (formerly Moodlerooms)

I would select Moodlerooms over many competitors as a result of what it offers in terms of functionality and control. Google classrooms has a definite place in education; however, Moodlerooms provides significantly more control for authors. As the owner and manager of the content, and as someone familiar with technology, I can incorporate a lot more functions and create different layouts with functionality boxes

Schoology Learning

Schoology provides a much more user-friendly experience for students and instructors while providing most, if not all, of the same functionality of Blackboard. In addition, Schoology adds additional social experiences that encourage student collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. There is also a strong community of educators who use Schoology, providing many peer learning groups for instructors to collaborate, share materials, and provide ideas for classroom content

Return on Investment

Open LMS (formerly Moodlerooms)

  • Moodlerooms has given classes of mine a positive ROI because it improves the educational experience for all students. It has helped all of our students, and with this, we can even help students who can not get to the classroom for some reason.
  • It helps to improve student scores, GPAs, and college attendance.
  • The positive impact can be directly correlated with the improvement of grades for students. Being able to access work in person and via Moodlerooms helps students to learn anywhere and any time. Grades have improved, and that is due to Moodlerooms.

Schoology Learning

  • Using Schoology to build a foundation for a blended learning model has helped increase my students ABC rate between 15-20% in all classes!
  • Using Schoology is forcing my students to become responsible for their own learning!
  • The only negative thing I have encountered is the students resistance to change!
