Splunk is software for searching, monitoring, and analyzing machine-generated big data, via a web-style interface. It captures, indexes and correlates real-time data in a searchable repository from which it can generate graphs, reports, alerts, dashboards and visualizations.
Able to show more than Log data in Splunk views, we tested several plug-ins during a small pilot, and we were able to bring O/S (Win/Unix/Linux) & APM data metrics into the same views as Logged data. I've seen others use it to visualize a wider range of data types, too...better …
If you want to analyze the full path focusing on the signatures it’s the best product in the market. If you want to test phishing, data exfiltration/DLP, DNS I don’t recommend Picus. Scenario based attacks also lacking. However Picus support is awesome and I like the development team. When we open a case, they’ll always return with the right answer
The best part of Securonix is it's architecture which makes it scalable and allows it to add any new feature to match the requirement. Securonix is well suited for enterprises who are mid to large size and are looking for a quick time to value, do not want to put upfront capex and invest less on the service layer. It becomes little costly for a small sized organisation.
It's well suited for what I do, which is network security operations. And that's for anything from troubleshooting incidents, troubleshooting performance, troubleshooting for the purpose of a compliance and auditing. It's not best suited for users who are new in terms of they're new to the product and they have expectations that probably Splunk cannot meet.
It has thousands of signatures and up-to-date attack vectors (It's the largest set in the market)
Attack vectors are mapped with existing vendors like Checkpoint and Mcafee, where you don't spend time finding out which cve mapped to which protection
Ability to focus/highlght solely new threats, it's superb for 0days and up-to-date protections. As there are always timing issue between updates and apply the updates on the products.
Blocked vs not blocked ratios on the dashboard with drill down menu specifiying the set of protections or signatures on the defensive measures
Already mapped mitre att&ck framework on the dasboard. SOC and analyst team using the Mitre framework.
Detection analytics enhance the analytics capabilities with pinpoint accuracy where to focus and how to prevent
Timeline and scheduled reports from the dashboard in flexible format
We are using Splunk extensively in our projects and we have recently upgraded to Splunk version 6.0 which is quite efficient and giving expected results. We keep track of updates and new features Splunk introduces periodically and try to introduce those features in our day to day activities for improvement in our reporting system and other tasks.
Securonix Next-Generation SIEM provides loads of features that can be utilized as per business requirements. With the Securonix Jupyter update, the feature set is fine tuned for efficient implementation. The SOAR platform will complete the product for automated response on top of the alerting capabilities. The primary factor for selecting a SIEM will include the support model. While implementing and currently using Securonix Next-Generation SIEM in our environment, we have experienced the best support provided by the SIEM team in all aspects.
You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.
Securonix acts with urgency to support day to day operational issues & queries and shows a real commitment to us as a partner. I rate this an 8 because there are still some bumps in the road, instances where communications can be sparse or unclear.
Splunk maintains a well resourced support system that has been consistent since we purchased the product. They help out in a timely manner and provide expert level information as needed. We typically open cases online and communicate when possible via e-mail and are able to resolve most issues with that method.
The online course was simple clear and described the main capabilities of the solution. There is also an initial module that can be done for free so anyone can familiarize themselves with the functionality of this solution. On the other hand, however, there could be more free online courses. Maybe even with a certificate, this would broaden the group of people who are familiar with the platform while increasing familiarity with the solution itself.
We use other vendors Verodin, AttackIQ, SafeBreach, Cymulate etc. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Please take a look at TrustRadius reviews of each product. I don’t want to go head to head for each product in this review. I select Picus because it's local startup company in our region. I like their support and engineering team. Support is marvelous. Product is giving what we expected from the product. Price is adequate. Reporting and dashboard is superb.
I didn't get to fully evaluate Logstash as our corporation was already using Logstash, but both seemed like viable solutions to the problem that we were having. I wanted to evaluate Logstash some more, both did seem like they would work for the business needs that we had, we went with splunk as many teams were already using it.
With Picus we have the tangible KPIs for the security
Detetcion and Prevention rates for the latest attacks are significantly increased
We work with many security vendors. We use picus scores and share specific outputs with the company in case of decreasing score rates where the development and product team analyzes their updates or product engines to increase the rates.
It helps our strategic plans where to focus and invest for the following years and planning/prioritizing the security budgets to specific highlighted areas
I don't have any numbers to share but Splunk has positively served as a 24/7 monitoring tool that has saved hours of work by self-detecting, saving statistics and alerting problems in the system or from external interfaces as soon as they happen.
Splunk dashboards does a solid job in collecting, analyzing data and creating reports that contain an entire day's activity and then automatically sent out to the business.
Splunk is very easy to learn and very useful to any program or business application.
