Creates a working VM copy of your VM servers
Backup and replications are very quick once you have run it the first time. I replicated new servers that had a 127GB drive in less than 15 min because it only backs up the data, not the entire drive.
If a backup or replication fails, you can set it to try again and that usually works. I have most of the mine set to retry 3 times.
If there is a problem like a backup failed it will email you so you don't have to babysit it.

On occasion, the error feedback is not as useful as we'd like. However, the forums, KB articles, and support are always helpful.
No other negatives come to mind at the moment. The software really does work well and there have not been many headaches using. Most of the headaches are when storage runs out of space, but that's not the fault of the software.

I really have no complaints about Veeam Backup & Replication. Their service has been excellent and the cost is minimal in comparison to other services I checked out. Implementation wasn't simple and the Veeam Support team was there to help each step of the way.

The initial setup took some time, however, with the help of the Starwind technical team, we were able to set it up from start to finish including seamlessly adding it to our existing backup solution. After that, there was no need for any additional setup or troubleshooting.

The Veeam Backup & Replication solution is up and running every time you need it as it was planned. In more than 3 years that we have been using the product every night, it might have failed or presented an error once or twice, so the availability percentage is almost at 100%.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.3

Support response can be slow and sometimes tedious if you have a non-generic issue in your environment. Due to my experience with Veeam, I often discover the solutions before support does, but on the rare occasion where I need a higher tier of support, their experience and skill set are excellent. If you truly find something odd in your environment, Veeam Support, Development and their teams of engineers will figure it out and provide custom hot-fixes when necessary.

(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform")Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Alternatives Considered

We've looked at physical tape backups, however, the infrastructure is too costly compared to Starwind VTL and it also requires manual changing of tapes that users will not want to do or forget to do. With VTL, it works exactly like a physical tape library with the same benefits and full automation.

Xen Orchestra for Citrix XenServer is a complementary product to Veeam, as long as Xen Orchestra addresses Citrix Xen Servers and Veeam does not. Both are great tools, although Xen Orchestra community edition is a whit better than the already free XenCenter, the reference management console for Citrix XenServer.

Scalability can be addressed in many ways, but there is a consequence:
Higher performance and smaller backup windows may put too much stress on
production storage, and therefore, on its performance and Availability
to production workloads. To reduce stress on production storage, version
9.5 introduces a new way of reading VM disks that is optimized for
enterprise storage.

Return on Investment

ROI was immediate as we got rid of expensive sneakernet backups with hard drives in a Pelican case
One-time cost of the product is very cost-effective
Support contracts are reasonable and we received excellent support throughout
We have much better peace-of-mind with our data being protected better

Veeam literally saved our bacon when we were hit with a ransomware attack by allowing us to painlessly restore VMs.
In order to meet our retention goals, we have had to invest in our backup infrastructure, such as purchasing additional disk shelves for our SAN.
The speed at which we are able to recover VMs and files helps reduce the cost of downtime.
