RMM at its Best

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Action1 mainly for patch management and Remote Control. Patching is handled SO easily and efficiently across all my devices on the schedule that I determine and is hands down the best solution I've ever used for this task. Remote Control was my initial need in finding the platform and this also works extremely well and I use it daily.

Pros

  • Patch Management
  • Remote Control
  • Software Deployment
  • Scheduled scripting

Cons

  • Linux Remote Control

Likelihood to Recommend

Any place that has multiple computers that need to be managed can benefit from using Action1. Currently that means Windows PC's and servers, Linux PC's and servers and devices running MacOS can be managed by Action1 and benefit from their patch management and software management tools. Mobile OS need not apply at this point.

Action1 for the Win

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Action1 is deployed to help us with IT inventory management, patching, vulnerability management and reporting. Having a cloud solution that bring all of these solutions together really helps us be more efficient and have a better understanding of where we need to focus our efforts to tighten security or provide more operational support to our end-users.

Pros

  • IT Inventory reporting
  • Update/Patch Management
  • Vulnerability reporting
  • Remote control capability

Cons

  • Support for Apple products is very lacking

Likelihood to Recommend

Windows environments are well supported in Action 1 but the Apple products are not.

My Time with Action1 An Honest Review

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Action1 for all of my Windows devices to manage updates. When I first started with my organization, they didn't have a WSUS in place or really even managed Windows updates. We are a nonprofit organization so when I was looking for a product that could manage my updates and have a scheduled time to install them across my network and most importantly featured a low price tag or even free, Action1 instantly stood out to me. I have less than 200 endpoints so being able to use Action1 for free was a big help.

Pros

  • Windows 10 to 11 Upgrade
  • Alerts end users of pending restarts for updates
  • .MSI files for endpoint installation via GP is flawless

Cons

  • Mac integration for update installation
  • Staying logged into Action1 longer as it constantly logs me out
  • Instant remote access to endpoints rather than waiting for acceptance on end user side (Windows, Mac, etc.)

Likelihood to Recommend

If your organization is like mine (nonprofit and tight budget) this product is for you. The first 200 endpoints are free and being we are a small organization, this product is perfect for us. I was able to use Action1 to upgrade all my endpoints from Windows 10 to 11 pretty much effortlessly. If you are not a nonprofit and have more endpoints over 200, this is still a great product to use as I don't find it very expensive to incorporate into your infrastructure.

Highly Recommend Excellent and Feature Rich Tool

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

inventory, vulnerability update and patch management, remote access, and more. The scope is our entire Windows environment up to 200 endpoints are free and we have around 100-125. We came from Lansweeper, there is not complete feature parity, but this is a huge cost savings and is completely cloud based and also deployed itself via Active Directory agent it was super-fast to deploy to all but remote endpoints that do not check-in with the domain. Those we did some manual deployments to fill in gaps which was very fast and easy.

Pros

  • Vulnerability and Patch Management
  • Update Management
  • Inventory and ITAM

Cons

  • Remote Access could use added functionality
  • The deployment screens for update deferrals can be hard to understand at first and easy to skip since it carries some default info when you create a new automation rather than a more conspicuous prompt to update.

Likelihood to Recommend

Best suited for small business environments or where AD can reach all devices. There are limitations to what data can be gathered and deployed remotely, could use some additional WMI or similar info like disk layout and usage, etc.

Action1 for small teams - way to go

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have a very small IT team, only 2 people, and about 100 devices to manage, both internally in the office and remotely.

To be honest, first usage idea was just as a inventory + easy remote access to the devices.

Later, we started using remote software deploy, patch management (I know it should be the main usage, but for us, it was a collateral bonus), some reporting on disk usage and so on.

Pros

  • Easy remote access to devices. That simple. We have some very unskilled users in the field where asking them to access their PC via conventional remote tools like TeamViewer, Anydesk, etc. was always a pain. Now, all they have to do is ensure their PC is online, and we can connect to them.
  • Remote software deploy. Before Action1, we did have some GPOs and scripts, but again - being able to deploy to PCs outside of our office/LAN, is just beautiful. On top of the standard repository, being able to create new packages is very useful for our scenario.
  • Inventory Reporting. Recently we had to identify PCs running old versions of Windows. Can't highlight enough how easy it is.

Cons

  • Even though my team and I use a lot of the remote desktop functionality, I believe it could be further improved in regards to file sharing and perhaps a dedicated client software so we could have even easier/faster access to our endpoints.

Likelihood to Recommend

For small teams having to deal with significant ammount of devices, I can't express how useful Action1 is. With very small effort, you can easily keep track of your devices, keep them up to date, deploy new software to your users, create recurring reports/alerts and so on.

Initially, the 100 endpoints for free was also a nice touch. Now, even better since they increased to 200. For the forseeable future, I have not to worry about costs and still can't believe it's a full solution for free, not those freeware stuff where what you really desire is behind a cost.

Great software easy to use

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use it to identify and mitigate security holes that need to be patched. Most of the time the patch is all ready to go on A1's end and I just need to approve it being applied. Sometimes I use it to find out who has a program installed and then I use it to uninstall that program from their machines.

Pros

  • Windows Updates
  • Patching Software
  • Reporting on software inventory

Cons

  • Lots of times Action1 will identify a program that needs to be patched, but then not really have a path laid out to get that done...so they just remain as they are, but are tagged as such.
  • Really wants to replace the windows update mechanism. Resists (or did at least) you if you try to keep updates as they are and update occasionally from Action1
  • Could develop the scripts section a bit more, looked pretty sparse last time I checked it out.

Likelihood to Recommend

For my specific scenario, Action1 works pretty well. I'm the sole IT person for a school district with 1500 kids 250 staff 6 schools and special services has a building and central office is its own building, so lots of people, lots of devices, IT Administrator stretched very thin.

Would also work well in a small to medium business (~10-500 employees)

It seems to be pretty scalable, but it's possible it's not meant for larger than 500 employee organizations, I don't know.

Excellent Patch Management software with Remote Management abilities

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Action1 helps with patch management and keeping our devices up-to-date. It allows me to upload both exe and msi files for update management which not every solution allows for. Using this I can manage my devices in office and remotely with ease. On top of that it helps address any cost concerns as the first 200 endpoints are free and as a small business it makes it really easy to implement.

Pros

  • The best at patch management due to being their main focus
  • Has a well organized interface that is easy to use
  • Offers built in vulnerability monitoring to help prioritize what apps need updating.

Cons

  • Their remote desktop tool is still lacking in features

Likelihood to Recommend

I use Action1 alongside another solution. Due to Action1 being free for the first 200 endpoints it is no trouble to do. Action1 has always done well at helping me update our devices on a regular cadence and has options to prevent the updates from interrupting the user experience. It is less helpful when it comes to remotely managing devices. The remote desktop function is still immature and lacking in features. There is also no live command line option and only allows for running scripts ad hoc.

Action1 - Great endpoint management solution

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have a fleet of 20 endpoints that are installed in vehicles that I primarily use Action1 with. I also have a separate fleet of 30 endpoints that are in the office that I use Action1 to manage.

Action1 has made my life easier in regards to scheduling updates and security patch management. The free 200 endpoints in real and I encourage smaller IT departments to try them out.

The only features that I am missing while using Action1 is live chat with a user (not as important as I usually have them on a phone call) and file transfer. This has made for some creative problem solving in order to get certain redistributables onto the devices for installs.

While I am currently using the free version of Action1 which does not come with dedicated support, I have used the premium version in the past and the help desk/support was top notch.

Pros

  • Patch management
  • automatic update scheduling
  • remote desktop assistance

Cons

  • Live chat with the end user
  • File transfer

Likelihood to Recommend

We have endpoints that have a competitors software and I like that there is a backstage where I can run commands manually if I need to. Action1 does not have this perse, however, if you automate tasks then they will run in the background.

Action1 is fantastic feature rich ... and free

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have a small satellite office (<10 endpoints) and we have been using the Action1 free tier to support, assist, remotely monitor and patch their endpoints.

Pros

  • remote control / assistance
  • patching Windows Operating Systems
  • Third party application patching
  • Dashboard central overview

Cons

  • I would love to see a file transfer capability
  • multiple monitor/screen support when remoted in could be improved (multiple screens at once)

Likelihood to Recommend

We tried NinjaOne as well as other RMM solutions, Action1 is free for less than 100 endpoints. Free, gratis, it's absolutely incredible and indisposable. For a small installation / office it is quite remarkable. When we tried to get pricing from NinjaOne they refused to cater for a small team but Action1 offered a similar toolset for free. No hitches, no hidden agenda - just absolutely free!

Action1 improves efficiency in IT operations.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Needed to solve multiple issues when starting with a new organization. We are a restaurant company, and we needed a solution that would work with Data center servers, Corporate office endpoints, remote users, and multiple restaurant locations with their POS equipment and office workstations. We needed a solution for software security patching, software deployments, inventory and discovery, automation, and even a single solution for some type of remote access that would work within and outside of our office and locations.

Pros

  • Automations. We utilize scheduled tasks that we define within Action1 to provide additional controls for reporting, alerting, and for endpoint management. It is a unique way to expand functionality by use of centrally managed scripting events.
  • Able to create and view reports showing detailed information of all types of endpoints within my enterprise. We can also create custom reports from a large set of available data points and can also create custom alerts based on these data points.
  • Vulnerability detection and resolution management. Able to detect vulnerabilities and apply controls or actions based on the vulnerabilities found. Along with the Security patching, this adds and extra layer of visibility and control to secure my environment.
  • Custom application deployments. Action1 provides a large set of third part applications you can deploy and patch updates for, but if you have custom applications built in-house or just an application that is not available in the software repository that Action1 has, you can build your own custom deployments easily.

Cons

  • Color schemes. The website provides a light and dark theme, but I would like more options to customize screen colors for my preference and ease of viewing.
  • A common language custom report builder. A query like report or alert builder to complement just selecting data points.

Likelihood to Recommend

Action1 provides an easy and solid single pane of glass to control Windows patching, third-party updates, custom software deployments, automation, and reporting. I can save many hours of work by successfully patching all endpoints regardless of location or type of endpoint. The reporting has provided greater visibility in what hardware we own and where it is located as well as understanding any problems or issues we need to address. I rely on Action1 to provide a large amount of functionality and visibility for the enterprise I support and would be lost without it. No other service comes close compared to the the functionality and cost.
