What is Google Container Registry?

Google Cloud Container Registry is a place to manage Docker images, perform vulnerability analysis, and decide who can access what with fine-grained access control. Existing CI/CD integrations let users set up fully automated Docker pipelines.

The cloud solution offers

  • Secure, private Docker registry - Access to secure private Docker image storage on Google Cloud Platform. Maintain control over who can access, view, or download images. Get consistent uptime on an infrastructure protected by Google’s security.
  • Build and deploy automatically - Automatically build and push images to private registry when committing code to Cloud Source Repositories, GitHub, or Bitbucket. Set up CI/CD pipelines with integration to Cloud Build or deploy directly to Google Kubernetes Engine, App Engine, Cloud Functions, or Firebase.
  • In-depth vulnerability scanning - Detect vulnerabilities in early stages of the software deployment cycle. Make certain container images are safe to deploy. Constantly refreshed database helps ensure vulnerability scans are up-to-date with new malware.
  • Lock down risky images - Use native integration with Binary Authorization to define policies and prevent deployment of images conflicting with the set policies. Trigger automatic lock-down of container images to prohibit risky images from being deployed to Google Kubernetes Engine.
  • Native Docker support - Define multiple registries based on your needs. Push and pull Docker images to your private Container Registry using the standard Docker command line interface. Use Docker naturally while searching images by name and tags.
  • Fast, high-availability access - Using Google's regional private repositories across the world optimizes response time globally.

During one of our recent projects, we relied heavily on GCR. We had a significant amount of application code to handle and ensuring reliable backups was essential. GCR proved to be the perfect platform for our requirements, offering top-tier security and ample storage capacity. It streamlined the process of managing our application code and its backups, ensuring a worry-free experience. Its integration is very easy with other cloud services , we used it GKE and Cloud Functions and it was very hassle-free .
  • Object Immutability feature allows us to protect our code and backups from accidental or malicious changes.
  • Data loss prevention feature helps us to prevent sensitive data from being leaked or exposed.
  • GCR has support for machine learning which is in my opinion is best .
  • The one area which i think GCR lacks is that it currently supports a limited number of file types
  • The major flaw a felt while working on it is it does not have feature of object versioning and object locking
As a Cloud Engineer while working on a migration project we used GCR and my experience of using it is actually good the reason behind this is: 1: GCR uses industry-standard encryption to protect your data.2: GCR offers data loss prevention features to help you prevent sensitive data from being leaked or exposed and last but not the least is GCR provides audit logging so you can track who has accessed your data and when, because of these reasons its my go to tool.

  • As a DevOps Engineer , GCR has made a important contribution to my organisation because GCR can be used to store code and assets, which can help to reduce the development time for new projects.
  • Using GCR has been a cost-effective solution for us since we only pay for the storage we actually utilise. This has resulted in significant savings on our cloud storage expenses.
  • We trust GCR because they prioritise the security of our data by utilising industry-standard encryption. This assurance brings us peace of mind, as we know our information is protected.
It is very easy to integrate GCR with other services and I integrated GCR with GKE and Cloud Build. 1: While working on one project I created one pipeline pulls the app's Docker image from GCR and builds the app's Docker image. Deployed that apps image in GKE.
2: Ive stored the data in GCR and that data was being used by cloud Run applications
