I've been using Harpoon for my business since 2018. There have been moments when I tried other, competing platforms, but I still ended up coming back to Harpoon in the end. It helps with several things at once - bookkeeping, invoicing, project management and profit goal setting.
  • Helps define profit goals and with metrics, shows if you are on track to reach them
  • Invoicing is easy and easy to track with projects and clients
  • For tax seasons, it easy to pull reports (e.g. expenses, P&Ls, etc.)
  • Sometimes expense reporting bring up duplicate transactions, which may be more of a fault of the API that connects my account, which is Plaid
  • Would be nice if in the future, they can offer ACH as one of the payment options for invoices
  • There are some redundancies that pop up when setting time frames for client work and the projects attached to them. If they aren't aligned, it can cause inaccurate reporting. If it just sent it once and it took care of both functions, it would be easier
I think Harpoon works best for freelancers, consultants, self employed people and smaller companies with less client to bill. For larger enterprises with hundreds or thousands of clients, there are larger, more intricate platforms in the market that are better suited for those needs.
  • Tracking profit goals in real time
  • client/project management tools
  • Invoicing is not the fanciest, but it works well
  • By providing a nice all-in-one platform for managing clients, related projects, invoicing and bookkeeping, it saved me from having to work with multiple platforms.
  • Saved me from wasting any further time trying to research competitors and trying out other software
These others accounting/invoicing platforms did a great job with the invoicing and bookkeeping, but at the time I used them, none of them had any goalsetting features. I also found the metrics dashboards a bit underwhelming.
The few times I've needed help or had questions about the platform, the founder got back to me. And fairly fast. The extra effort resonated well with me.
No. I don't believe it is an option that is offered.
As mentioned prior, the fact that the founder himself came to my assistance with my questions was a nice touch.

As a freelancer, Harpoon is my primary tool for managing invoices, collecting payments, and actualizing my goal progress. With the dashboard and scheduling features, I know how much I've earned, and how that earning will play out over the course of the year.

With my tracked goals, I can easily and quickly compare actuals with the goals and discover if I'm on track or ahead of the game.

With invoicing, they're easy to create and quickly integrates with Stripe for direct deposit into my bank accounts. On late invoices, Harpoon automatically emails my clients and prods them for payment. Very rarely do I need to do anything further to collect payments.

Harpoon also offers reports, expense tracking, and time tracking. As a freelancer or small agency, Harpoon is designed to work with its users in a helpful way. How Harpoon structures the interface and system is just as important than what it does.
  • Makes Sending Invoices & Collecting Payment Easy, for Freelancers
  • Tracking Financial Goals (Monthly & Annual) & Projecting Future Results
  • Provides Insights On AR, Earned Income, Top Clients, and other helpful but highly relevant data points.
  • The automatic expense management is basic. It does sync with banks, but I've had some duplicate entry issues that are being worked out of the system.
  • I'd like to see additional reports that dive deeper into some of the dashboard widgets.
If you're freelancing or running a small marketing agency, I'll steer you strongly towards Harpoon. It's such a terrific fit for this business type. It provides easy invoice management so if that's all you care about, use Harpoon this way. If you want a tool that will guide you towards success, Harpoon helps you do this when launching your account. Know what you want to earn, what it takes to get there, and how you're doing along the way. What financial software for freelancers provides simple project tools? Harpoon.
  • Clear and precise visibility of my financial status.
  • Projections of how I'm doing today, this month, and this year.
  • Clarity on what needs to happen with client development to reach my goals.
  • It shrinks the amount of time I spend on getting clients to pay my invoices.
I've used Less Accounting and & Quickbooks Online. After Less Accounting was acquired, its development was mostly stopped. While the tool was a simple way to manage invoices and expenses, its directional philosophy changed with the new owners. Quickbooks Online was a solid tool, but the company support was unhelpful and hard to work with at times.

Harpoon provides a great tool, with a company that cares about its users.
