What is phpIPAM?

phpIPAM is an IP address management application (IPAM) designed to assist network administrators, IT managers, system administrators, data center managers, and managed service providers (MSPs) in efficiently managing and organizing IP addresses. According to the vendor, phpIPAM provides a centralized platform for tracking and allocating both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. It is suitable for small to large-sized companies and offers a range of features to streamline IP address management and enhance network infrastructure organization.

Key Features

IPv4/IPv6 IP address management: According to the vendor, phpIPAM allows the management of both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, providing a centralized platform to track and organize IP addresses while enabling efficient allocation and utilization.

Section / Subnet management: Users can create and manage sections and subnets, providing a hierarchical structure for organizing IP addresses and simplifying the management of IP address ranges.

Automatic free space display for subnets: The vendor claims that phpIPAM automatically calculates and displays the available free space within subnets, helping users identify available IP addresses without manual calculations and facilitating efficient allocation.

Visual subnet display: According to the vendor, the software provides a visual representation of subnets and their relationships, allowing users to quickly understand the subnet structure and hierarchy, enhancing the visualization of IP address allocation.

Automatic subnet scanning / IP status checks: The vendor states that phpIPAM performs automatic scanning of subnets to check the status of IP addresses, identifying active, reserved, and available IP addresses, enabling proactive monitoring and management.

PowerDNS integration: According to the vendor, phpIPAM seamlessly integrates with PowerDNS, a DNS server software, simplifying the synchronization of IP addresses and DNS records.

NAT support: The vendor claims that phpIPAM supports Network Address Translation (NAT) functionality, enabling the mapping of private IP addresses to public IP addresses and facilitating the routing of network traffic between different networks.

RACK management: The software provides functionality to manage racks and their associated devices, allowing tracking of devices' physical location within racks and enhancing the organization and management of network infrastructure.

Domain authentication (AD, LDAP, Radius): According to the vendor, phpIPAM supports authentication against Active Directory (AD), LDAP, and RADIUS servers, enabling users to log in using their existing domain credentials, enhancing security, and streamlining user management.

Per-group section/subnet permissions: The vendor claims that phpIPAM allows granular control over access permissions for sections and subnets, enabling the assignment of specific user groups to manage designated sections/subnets, enhancing security, and ensuring proper access control.

phpIPAM is used to document our network VLAN and subnet structure. We are able to document our Internet Service Provider(ISP), detailed circuit information and all contact information. It provides us with a way to have well-documented Firewall Zones along with routings. All the information within phpIPAM is easy to search and find quickly. We use phpIPAM for our IT department with user name passwords required to access information. Since it's a web-based application there is no need to worry able the installation of a desktop client.
  • Static IP tracking
  • DHCP Pool leases
  • Break down networks in different subnets and VLANs
  • Device documentation
  • Visual aid is limited
  • Interface is old and could use a refresh
  • Updating the software is difficult
phpIPAM is great for a team environment and complex network environments so all members are informed. It's not very user-friendly for administrators to maintain; a IT individual with Linux OS experience is needed in my opinion.
  • Static IP Tracking
  • Rack Configurations
  • Communication Provider Documentation
  • Network device documentation
  • Organizing and documenting VLAN
  • Detailing circuit information
  • Software is free so ROI is immediate
  • phpIPAM is easy to use and enter information
  • Installing phpIPAM is pretty difficult and requires Linux OS knowledge.
  • There are minimal requirements to access phpIPAM interface.
  • Takes a while to get phpIPAM setup and populated with detailed information.
