It's not cheap to buy, not cheap for maintenance, and not cheap to run (takes lots of server resources). … For smaller companies, they may look toward free or relatively cheap solutions like Cacti, PRTG, or Nagios.

We monitor all of our switches with SolarWinds - we tried a more expensive and dedicated solution, but we found it cumbersome and less of a value than what we already had in SolarWinds. … But as it stands it is worth the price to renew it.

SolarWinds NPM shines when properly applied to Enterprise scenarios but I actually see more value-for-money in the smaller space where dedicated network personnel aren't always part of the budget. … While there are alternate solutions to SolarWinds NPM, this offering sits in a well-priced space easily adding more value than the sticker price.

If you were a larger shop the licensing for SolarWinds would get very expensive because they license it per "node" or item you want to monitor.
