Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor
We have used SolarWinds NPM for several years but we are beginning to migrate to ExtraHop for network monitoring. We found ExtraHop easier to setup and configure and have more confidence that all devices are being found. To unlock the full features of NPM, you need to install agents which is unpopular within our organization.
- It is a nice tool that does a good job of monitoring traffic and finding devices on the network
- Tool is very cost efficient and is a great choice for smaller organizations that don't have a ton of capital to invest in a networking monitoring tool
- Great online community of users/developers for support if you have issues
- For a large enterprise, the tool seems to lack some key features and functions that other tools provide
- Agents are not required, but to unlock the power for a large enterprise the are needed. Agents often get blamed for issues in our company, so not having them eliminates a point of blame
- Their support model is mostly via the online community site, which they do a very good job with. That said, this model is not for everyone, so it depends on what you prefer
- Good tool for quick ROI, harder to achieve in an enterprise environment
- Support is minimal and you get what you pay for here
- The sales approach is unique and it is very much a subscription provider
SolarWinds NPM is a good entry tool for smaller companies as it provides you a decent baseline to monitor your network. To unlock the full potential you need to add agents and it falls pretty quick. It is not as good as enterprise tools like ExtraHop. Also it is not as easy to setup as tools like ThousandEyes
