Spotfire is being used as an Enterprise level Business Intelligence Platform. Our data is being fed from various different ERP's and a ETL team is transforming the data in a way it can be consumed by spotfire. During the design phase the spotfire and ETL teams come together and create a model where certain things will be handled in spotfire and most of them in the warehouse. Spotfire is a very robust tool, pulling lots of data with less columns ,makes no harm and gives ideal results.
  • Spotfire has a great Geo Analytics platform where Geo-coding is automatically performed from version 6.0 and complex geoanalytics problems can be solved in combination with the Tibco Enterprise Runtime for R (TERR) engine, if the company has R language expertise
  • Spotfire has some cool inbuilt functions available through which we do not have to do manual calculations like Total,%Cumulative Sum,YOY,MOM QOQ kind of stuff, and lots other functions which make life simpler
  • Iron python scripting is an advantage but, of course, tricky initially if you do not have experience, but it can simplify users' lives if used properly
  • Scheduled updates and caching. If we are trying to get the dashboards up in a flash , this feature is useful
  • One more important thing in the latest version, is the business author piece on the web player where business users can develop their own stuff on Web, this is a good start and hope to see this developed further
  • Spotfire is coming up with new Mobile Metrics platform, i.e. it is responsive on mobile devices
  • Also there is a new KPI chart which can be very useful for Executive reporting.
  • Customizability on the Analyst end: Spotfire is a good tool, but there are a few points where it should improve. I cannot hide an object like a tab or visualization r
  • Data Load speed at the analyst level, I somehow feel when i try to load data in the analyst level it loads slow and while using at webplayer because of the schedule updates it runs fast. I know there is the caching concept, but it is unlike QlikView whichgives a great performance with the desktop version as well. I would expect the same to happen here
Suitable Key questions to buy/use Spotfire: Do you have an enterprise data warehouse ready and are looking for a BI tool which can get you results fast with less development? Do you have a group of analyst who are good at Excel type reporting and can learn a new tool and do better reporting? Do you have a group of data analysts who want to study data to identify patterns in it? Are you looking for a tool/technology company which takes customer feedback and incorporates them into the tool quickly? Are you looking for a tool whose tech forum is increasing? Apart from the above questions, if your team has basic programming skills , they can utilize the power of Java Script/Iron Python and R language to make wonders in spotfire. Ideally any scenario is possible in Spotfire, but do not consider this as data Transformation tool, basic transformations are possible ,but typically its a reporting tool which can tell the story of your data effectively. My purpose to use the software is short development cycles sometimes overnight if data is there.

I have used Tableau & Qlikview. I felt QlikView is very IT & Developer friendly with great customizable options and a great scope of scalability. Tableau with the limited use i did, I felt was very easy to use for simpler operations but for a larger complex operations I felt Spotfire & QlikView were more appropriate. But honestly, at the ease of use level, I felt Tableau was quite a bit more user friendly than Spotfire & QlikView.
Last couple of years, the amount of newer features what spotfire is bring is good, bt that has not added any value to our day to day work..so 70% impacted in a positive direction, do giving a 7 rating.
We have more than 800 users and user types mainly include Analysts who develop the dashboards, CIO Office, Metric Managers, and field executives.
Spotfire has a range of connectivity to different data sources
Spotfire does have collaboration, but our users could not adapt to it very easily. probably its a training gap or the tools features are not intuitive. We do not use much of the collaboration facilities
I have used all the charts in Spotfire, the ease of use of charts is great and especially their geo-spatial visualizations are very good.I like the tree map & heat map too, which solve many problems.

  • Positive: Business uses these tools for day to day operations, saving time
  • Negative: Usability can be little more intuitive
  • No Training
The only training was from the developers, there was no official training for users...The impact was huge..we spent a lot of time explaining users each area of the tool, this was very cumbersome.
yes it was easy to learn, but the advantage of working with a different BI tool, you can get hold of this too fast, over a period of time there were hurdles but we used to have intermediate sessions from the company (which stopped now) on the new features and releases, there is also a lot of webinar series organized by the company, joining them once a month solves many technical problems(but nothing specific for our organization). Ofcourse there is the Spotfire forum, where most of your encountered problems are already discussed. If its a new problem we need to get creative and read the documentation which is good.
We definitely evaluated few products , but the existing range of products what we had in our organization met our business needs and real reason to adopt another Spotfire product did not arise in our case.

Spotfires Map Chart has inbuilt geo coding. As long as you Country, state & city within your data, integration map chart to the fines details is pretty easy.
It offers different types of Charts, and also offers different layers to be overlaid on the map.We can overlay a Feature or marker layer.
For example
1.you want to show how the sales are in the US by state, you can overlay the Feature layer on the base Map.
2.Now you want to see all the costcenter offices in each state by lat long positions, you can see them in the Marker Layer, as each markers.
There is a lot of scope of taking these maps to the next level by using R functions too...

In an enterprise architecture, if Spotfire Advanced Data services(Composite Studio),data marts can be managed optimally and scalability in a data perspective is great. As the web player/consumer is directly proportional to RAM, if the enterprise can handle RAM requirement accomodating fail over mechanisms appropraitely, it is definitely scalable,
Spotfire is pretty stable in our environment.Couple of issues we see is getting our scheduled cached reports loosing its cache at times, but it is considerably stable and all presentations went good :)
No, we have not encountered any problems here, spotfire loads pretty quickly after using Iron Python or Javascript

Spotfire is used extensively at our organisation and by our clients to leverage and gain insights into large quantities of data. We primarily use it for data exploration, reporting, predictive analytics and data segmentation. With Spotfire we are able to build comprehensive dashboards quickly and efficiently without the need for specialist BI developers.
  • Quickly build reports from large quantities of data and then publish those reports via the web player.
  • Ability to work with data sets in different formats, i.e. data aggregation or SQL queries are not required.
  • Out of the box analytics that makes it easy for business users to gain insights into their data.
  • Ability to leverage R scripts in Spotfire.
  • Easier functionality of Python scripts.
  • Stability improvements are required, software has a tendency to crash.
  • Easier optimisation of reports for the web player especially where large data sets are involved.
Spotfire may not be appropriate for mission critical reporting, e.g. financial reporting.

Well suited to enable business users to quickly build, change and enhance reports.

Spotfire is used company wide by approximately 30 consultants. We have a few data scientists that makes use of the more advanced features.
It is a simple process to source data from different sources on different platforms, e.g. SQL server, Oracle, HANA, etc. These data sets can be combined and aggregated into different views using the Spotfire product which can then be represented in different ways.
Using the Spotfire Web Player it is very quick and easy to create and share reports, insights, etc. with many different users inside and outside the organisation. Using Tibco automation servces reports can be distributed to many different users in different formats.
Visualisation are aesthetically pleasing and always well presented. The ability to drill down into single data rows is very useful.
I found Spotfire easier to use.
Spotfire is well entrenched in our organisation. All our consultants are using the tool and we are able to provide analytics services to many clients quickly and efficiently as a result.
Works great in the states - however does not work well in Africa.

I have helped Oil & Gas clients in implementing several Drilling, Completions, Production, Surveillance, Reserves and O & G Accounting Use Cases. Some of these analyses help users analyze near real-time data; others are previous day or weekly/Quarterly/Annual data. Data Relationships and Statistical analysis is another popular areas amongst Geologists, Engineers and Engineering Techs.
  • Enables you to visualize and analyze data.
  • Perform predictive analytics based on statiscal models.
  • Interaction with the data which enables slicing & dicing of the data based on specific requirements which can be very fluid and change from hour to hour
  • Share analyses with other team members, partners and vendors.
  • Connect to disparate data sources for analysis.
  • Run more interactive sessions/meetings without having to say, "I'll get back to you on that".
  • It's an interactive visualization and BI tool, so if you are looking to generate static formatted reports or invoices then this is probably not the tool you need.

Spotfire v6.x - Great improvement to the Map Chart. Another big improvement is being able to move parts of analysis from one dxp to another, which saves you a lot of time and enables multi-user development.

Spotfire professional v5.5 has a new architecture and built-in support for statistical modeling. There is a huge improvement in performance and broader statistical support.

I work with several different clients so I have seen it being implemented for 20-30 users and I have also seen it being implemented for thousands of users. But one thing is fairly consistent, the user-base grows very rapidly.
Basic Text file, MS Excel and Relational Database connectivity is out of the box. You may need to get the MS SQL Server, Oracle database drivers, though. Apart from that, now you have dozens of pre-built specialized connectors to either other popular platforms like SSAS, MATLAB, TERADATA, etc. or other Industry specific popular tools which makes it extremely viable to use Spotfire for disparate systems and be able to analyze using just Spotfire platform.
Highly like their Web Player environment which makes it very easy to share with others. Process of publishing analyses to the Web Player environment is also very easy. On the collaboration side, you'll need Tibbr configured to make use of the Collaboration Panels in Spotfire.
Extremely easy to develop and configure visualizations using drag & drop or Property Sheet. Spotfire was planning on releasing some additional charts in 6.x version, I would like to see them in the future releases shortly.
The usual suspects:
  • Microsoft
  • Tableau
  • Qlickview
  • Microstrategy
5
We are a consulting company, so our primary use of the product is to provide consulting and training services to clients.
5
Consultants, trainers and installers. Apart from the dedicated resources, we are growing the team with in-house training to support our growing client-base.
  • General business intelligence; more specifically, data interaction and visualization.
  • Identifying hidden trends, slicing & dicing the data without having to depend on IT or other developers.
  • Depending on industry: Predictive Analytics, optimizing production, cost & process efficiencies.
Spotfire is one of the best products in its domain and Spotfire is committed to making substantial investment and releasing a new version every 6 months. Support for "Big Data" is yet another reason to recommend.
As a part of a consulting company, I have used several products but most recently I have been working on the Microsoft BI stack.
  • Implemented in-house
Installtion required some assistance from the Spotfire resources. The basic install is fairly straightforward but some assistance is required in integrating it with Active Directory and enabling authentication.
  • Online training
  • In-person training
  • Self-taught
We provide training services based on customer feedback, and our training is highly-rated.
Online training is fine, but the instructor-led is better.
It is very easy to use, and a lot of users got started without any formal training. But a formal structured training course definitely compresses the learning period.
Yes
Spotfire is a very important and an intrinsic part of most our clients' core businesses. They cannot afford to not have the backing of qualified individuals to help keep it up and running (even if the product is very robust and doesn't need a great deal of support).
Spotfire has been very supportive and responsive. They have great, highly-qualified resources.
Easy to install & configure. Once installed, very easy to use, intuitive and rich product from the end-user perspective. Keep in mind, the product is for data visualization & analysis and predictive analytics and is not a traditional reporting platform.
Very high availability with minimum maintenance.
Considering the amount of data Spotfire supports, and the ability to connect to so many different data sources, the performance is really strong; specially, if you are working with v5.5
  • Several Oil & Gas specific products.
  • Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Oracle database.
  • SAP
  • Web Services.
Some integrations are very simple, out-of-the-box. Others require add-ons provided by Spotfire called Advance Data Services and OpenSpirit.
  • None that I didn't already mention.

Spotfire is scalable, flexible, intuitive and extremely fast. We were having issues with Tableau performance and decided to trial Spotfire. We noticed the difference right away, and then when I played with the analytical abilities of Spotfire, we decided that Spotfire was the way to go. It's not as eye catching as Tableau but definitely more functional. It is probably the best and fastest data discovery tool in the market.
  • Analytics
  • Data Discovery since it's fast
  • Visualization
Spotfire is excellent for high speed/real-time analytics. I love the new Spotfire Cloud platform; have it hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and works really well. Statisticians will also love the product and I think of Spotfire as the next level of SPSS. There are a few visualization aspects I'd like them to improve as that's one aspect I prefer in Tableau.
Company-wide, but we're a small company of 10-15.
real-time, advanced analytics
Bookmarks
Needs some work here and is not up to the level of Tableau. ex. pivot/unpivot should be easy to do in one click as in Tableau.
Tableau user for 5 years. While Tableau is excellent for visualization, it falls short with analytics and performance. but if you would have given me both Spotfire and Tableau at the start, I would have chosen Tableau as it is so eye catching and easier to consume. But in a thorough evaluation, Spotfire would win.
The cloud platform is not yet as stable as I'd like. Once it is, I'd change this to 10.
