What is Uncat?

Uncat is a software solution designed to assist accountants and bookkeepers in categorizing transactions and organizing uncategorized records. It is marketed as a tool suitable for professionals of all sizes, ranging from solo practitioners to large firms. According to the vendor, Uncat can be utilized by accountants, bookkeepers, accounting firms, bookkeeping services, and financial consultants across various industries to enhance workflow efficiency and improve client communication.

Key Features

Integrate with Multiple Accounting Platforms: Uncat claims to seamlessly integrate with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and Xero, allowing users to manage clients from different accounting platforms all on one Uncat dashboard.

Sync and Choose Specific Accounts: Users have the ability to select which accounts to sync for each client, including Uncategorized Expense, Uncategorized Income, Uncategorized Asset, Ask My Accountant, Ask Client, Suspense, etc. Transactions will automatically sync into Uncat, and users can also opt to sync all transactions missing a certain field, even if they have already been categorized.

Customize Sync Duration: According to the vendor, Uncat offers the option to customize the sync duration, allowing users to sync transactions back 3 months by default. For a one-time charge of $5 per additional month, users can extend the sync duration further. The vendor states that there is no limit on the number of transactions that can be synced.

Automatic Client Notifications: Uncat claims to automatically send notifications to client users via email and optional SMS text messages when there are transactions that require a client response. These notifications reportedly contain a Magic Link for easy access to the client's Uncat dashboard.

Request Additional Transaction Information: Users have the ability to ask or require client users to provide additional information, such as Vendor, Customer, Class, Location, Billable, Tax, and Account (Category), for transactions. The vendor states that users can also assign client users to update transactions from specific accounts.

Request Documents from Clients: Uncat provides a feature that allows users to ask clients to provide key information and important documents through the Requests tab in the Uncat dashboard. This feature aims to streamline the collection of necessary documents for accounting and bookkeeping purposes.

Invite Colleagues and Assign Permissions: Users can invite unlimited accountant users to join their Uncat account at no additional cost. Accountant users can be assigned to specific clients, and different permission levels can be set for each user, according to the vendor.

Categorize and Update Transactions: Uncat enables users to categorize transactions and update other fields, such as Category, Vendor, Customer, Class, Location, Billable, and Tax, directly in the Uncat dashboard. The vendor claims that changes made in Uncat will sync into QuickBooks or Xero.

Apply Bulk Actions to Transactions: Users can supposedly apply bulk actions to transactions, such as assigning the same Class to a list of transactions, in just a few clicks.

Send and Receive Messages: Uncat provides a Client Chat feature for communication with clients and a Company Chat feature for internal communication with colleagues within the Uncat platform.

I use Uncat to get transaction level detail from my clients. I've also started using it for documentation requests. It save time by avoiding emails and/or spreadsheets to obtain the information. It sends automatic reminders to my clients letting them know there are items I need information for and I get notifications once they've responded.
  • Obtaining transactions specific information from clients
  • Receiving documentation from clients
  • Syncing with QuickBooks Online
  • Some of the bulk update features seem a little clunky to me
It is an amazing tool for clients that purchase many different types of products from Amazon where it is impossible for an outsourced bookkeeper to know how to code each purchase. For clients that use the same vendors for the same purposes month after month it may not be very beneficial.
