Summary: You want to learn about security in a DevOps world, doing security inside CICD in a more automated fashion.  

We’re going to talk about some security testing tools you may have seen in your ina DevOps or you may be looking for different testing tools for CICD or application lifecycle on the development side. 

Static tests for security analysis look at the source code of your application. It's great for testing early on. However, there is a high false positive rate. There’s dynamic testing that you can do as part of your application lifecycle. This typically has lower false-positives but can take a little longer. There's interactive security testing. This is similar to RASP (Runtime Application Self Protection). It lives within your application code and can find security vulnerabilities as you deploy code. 

Today we’re talking about the FAST framework for automated security testing. You can do further testing as well in live applications, like dynamic testing. Same thing for interactive testing. 

Wallarm does active threat verification that lives on the web or web application firewall. We use your live application traffic to find threats and attacks going on and verify if that attack is finding an exploit. The last part is RASP, which also lives within your application code. This is typically a library for something like Python or JavaScript node to do security live in real time. 

FAST lets you shift left and do security right. We take your existing functional tests and automate that into thousands of security tests as simple as possible without any changes to your code or pipeline. As your CICD pipeline runs, traffic is sent to your application. Our proxy sits in between, generating security tests for cross-site scripting, SQL injections, remote code execution, etc and fuzzy testing for things like user input or API key values. On the left side, we have the FAST proxy. We have the CICD integration where we are creating tests and verifying your application security policies. Monitoring and analytics on the FAST module fit into your CICD pipeline. On the right,  never send traffic or applications with vulnerabilities into production. 

We capture a baseline from QA or production traffic. You can specify a test parser to detect anomalies. The running tests retrieve results in an easily automated fashion with an API for CICD integration so everything that we have within our products has an open API. Jenkins or Jenkins plugin and other CICD pipeline tools work easily through this API. We also take authentication and credentials from the request. There's no need to add credentials to another testing tool. We also do regression testing. A standard Github code-check will kick off the pipeline that’s going to build docker containers. Things like static analysis can be done before you ever kick off a docker build. 

Once we have that target container build, we're going to build this part of our development environment. Kick off our Selenium functional test that will proxy all traffic to the FAST node. The FAST proxy will call to the Wallarm cloud A.I. for recommendations to run security tests depending on created policies. Next, it sends the security tests to the development application. If it fails, the pipeline stops. If it passes all tests, it's deployed into the proper environment. 

The demo will run a Jenkins configuration but FAST works on other setups.
 
Here is what the Wallarm FAST plugin looks like. We have our credentials, node token, the testing within our workspace pulling from the GitHub repository. We want to set the docker machine IP address. We'll look for the Docker image as well as the policy name. If you don't have the policy name, it uses default policies. You can modify for your needs. Then, allow the hostmask or website to test. Go back to our FAST project. Create a file and commit it to a task file. And that should kick off a pipeline. We can see that the pipeline is now being built. Go to the console output and take a look. You can see the different tasks that have failed or passed.

The neatest thing about the dashboard is you can simply go into this issue and it takes you to the vulnerabilities page. This gives an easily digestible way for developers to understand why exactly it’s a vulnerability. 

If there are false-positives, mark it as false. Set the rest to high, medium, or low. Any time there is a detected vulnerability, you can send it to a security group. Send daily, weekly, or monthly security reports to somebody, the CISO or CTO.
