Workday Review - Tier 1 system like others

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Workday is a classic tier 1 HCM platform. Depending on your organization, how it is set up, and the policies/processes you have in place, you will ultimately get out of it as much or as little as you do. Like other module-based HCMs, the benefits come when you string multiple modules together (i.e., HCM + learning + recruitment + L&D, etc.). Workday is a complex HCM, though, and not to be taken lightly. If you do not have a structured HRIS team with a solid understanding of best practices and system hygiene, it can quickly become overwhelming for many companies to handle. It is also very costly, like any tier 1 - so if you have less than 5000 employees, you probably cannot afford to maintain this program. Great ability to set up a variety of integrations; my previous org had over 50 coming from Workday, as well as some edit/write/insert integrations coming into it from downstream systems like OKTA, Greenhouse, and Caro.

Pros

  • Integrations - strong API, RaaS, etc. Fairly easy to set up and control.
  • Reporting - the report writing is complex, but you can do a lot with it.
  • Module configuration - a lot of options and variations for organization specific choices.
  • Bi-annual upgrades - fairly standard for SaaS, but WD does it well.

Cons

  • The UI isn't great. Other HCM's are further along.
  • Report writing could be simpler so the average user could self serve.
  • AI is costly to use - the WD model isn't friendly from a financial perspective.

Return on Investment

  • 00 ROI. If anything, WD is a cost and a negative ROI. No HCM SaaS will ever provide you with a positive ROI. At best, you break even. The point of these systems is to accelerate other ROI generating functions - L&D, S&D, Performance, Talent, downstream integrations, etc.
  • Leverage the system to decrease manual effort and enforce strong data practices. Use the data and draw analytics to drive better decision-making.
