Overall Satisfaction with Adobe PhotoShop

Adobe PhotoShop is being used across our organization in very specialized settings. While it is not widely used, that is because the skill set required to use it is specialized. It specifically addresses the problem or opportunity of graphic design needs and communication design that goes beyond your typical PowerPoint with image stuffed in. It is also widely used by our commercial and digital teams.
  • Layered images: This helps us manipulate specific portions of images without damaging the original. Layers are exceptionally useful.
  • Pre-measured templates for common outputs (banner ads, social images, etc.).
  • High quality image design and manipulation for multiple platforms and dpi counts.
  • PhotoShop is a specialized tool with a learning curve. The controls are sometimes cryptic to the unimmersed.
  • The licensing model for PhotoShop and the Creative Suite can sometimes be cost-prohibitive and hard to justify deploying.
  • There are lots of overlaps in the Adobe Creative Suite that make it difficult to know if PhotoShop, Lightroom, PhotoShop Lite, etc. are the right tools for the job.
  • Layered graphics
  • Creative Cloud connectivity.
  • Universal familiarity within the commercial and digital teams globally. It is literally the gold standard of graphic design.
  • It has helped us keep some of our graphic design in house
  • It has helped us collaborate consistently when we do need to share the graphic design work with an external vendor. It is a tool that provides a common language and platform.
  • It has provided us an opportunity to capitalize on photo shoots and use the imagery we have to the fullest.
  • It has a great cross-platform story with Mac users and Windows users.
  • It has an increasingly healthy story on the iPad.
GIMP is a great freeware program when you just don’t have access to a PhotoShop license. It is not quite as robust of a platform and the creative cloud story is not as good, but it is a great alternative to have temporarily in a pinch. As the saying goes, though, you can either do it right or you can do it twice.

Adobe PhotoShop is a standard for creative teams and it is particularly well-suited for distributed design teams who like to share creative projects in the creative cloud. It is excellent for layered graphics and more advanced professional work, but it is also a solid tool for novice designers who want to professionalize their work in a meaningful way. PhotoShop Express is a good option in some situations, but there is no real replacement for good work done in PhotoShop—so much so that PhotoShop is as much a verb as it is a product.
