What is Graphics Software?
Graphics software provides tools that allow users to create, edit, and store high-quality images. Certain tools, like 3D character creation and certain drawing capabilities, are similar to those found in video and animation software, but they are still very different. Businesses use graphics software to create professional marketing materials like logos, clip art, and web graphics.
Graphics Software Features & Capabilities
Advanced font options
To choose the right type of graphics software, users need to know what kind of files they will be working with.
Raster files use an assortment of colored dots (or pixels) to form an image. Since the dots are created at a certain size, enlarging the image can make it blurry, while shrinking it can erase important details. Raster files are usually best for photographs or complex images, as long as they do not need to be resized very often.
PaintShop Pro, Microsoft Paint, and Adobe Photoshop are some of the most popular types of graphic software for raster files. Users can easily import photos and edit individual elements. More complex editing options are also available, like compositing (layering two images together), or removing unwanted items from the background. Some graphics software can be used to create 3D images.
Instead of using pixels, vector files use mathematical equations to determine how certain elements should be placed within the design. It can get pretty complicated, but the main idea is that these equations allow vector graphics to be scaled up or down without losing clarity - which is ideal for logos, banner ads, or web art that is simple but may need to be resized regularly.
Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Inkscape are good examples of vector-based graphics software. Users can create designs using geometric shapes, then customize those designs with colors, textures, and text. There are even freehand drawing tools that allow the user to create their own vector images and then “lock” them into place, so they can be enlarged or compressed without losing quality.
Most graphics software vendors offer different plans for individual or business use. For a larger lump sum, users can buy the full software and install it on one machine, but that may not always be cost effective. Most vendors offer monthly subscription plans for $10-$50 a month, depending on the number of users. If users still aren’t sure what software they need, most vendors also offer free trials for 7-15 days.
There are some free graphics software programs available online, however, they typically have limited functionality. Canva is a popular free choice that offers templates, basic photo editing, and stickers, but it still has a paid version with more premium options.
