Overall Satisfaction with Alexa

Our organization used Alexa to try and identify website traffic trends so we could better understand who was coming to our website, where they were going, how long they were staying and what content resonated most. Our goal was to use the data to be able to provide better content for our users.
  • Web traffic analysis
  • Inbound link analysis
  • Keyword traffic - helped improve SEO
  • Metrics aren't as accurate as Google Analytics
  • Would like a more detailed drill down of site visitor geography
  • Site keyword functionality not as robust as SimilarWeb
  • Gave us a better understanding of who was coming to our site and way
  • Allowed us to create better content by monitoring site visitor behavior and seeing where they spend their time
  • Increased site traffic due to SEO/keyword tools
If you want to focus only on your own web analytics, then Google Analytics is the way to go as no product will give you more accurate data. However, what Google Analytics cannot do is the competitive analysis functionality, which is where a product like Alexa comes in. It's about on par with SimilarWeb in many ways, they just go about the analytics in slightly different ways. Really, it comes down to personal preference as to which you prefer. Thankfully both offer free trials so you can test out the platforms before fully committing. SimilarWeb may be a bit better in terms of mobile web data.
If you are looking to begin an initial dive into website competitive analysis on a relatively low budget, then Alexa is a good option. They have a number of different options, so you can pick the plan that is right for you depending if you want to focus only on basic web traffic analytics or focus more on SEO.
