Overall Satisfaction with Automox
We use Automox for automated Linux server patching within my organization. Critical systems are patched within maintenance windows and set up as zero-touch, so it handles everything once scheduled. Automox automates patches which helps in reducing vulnerabilities. It provides real-time visibility and requires minimal manual input if at all, keeping systems secure and compliant. We use it to patch Linux servers, focusing on critical systems within scheduled windows. It’s hands-off once configured, allowing us to focus on other tasks.
Pros
- Automated patching
- Grouping of assets
- Easy to implement policies
- Multi-tenancy
Cons
- Agent auto-updates
- SSO Integration
- Agent disconnects
- Machine-id mismatches
- Time savings
- Patch reporting
- Endpoint patch visibility (single pane of glass)
Typically, Automox is utilized to upgrade packages and prevent updates; however in our case, Automox didn't turn off any built-in package updating via systems like apt, so we've had to deactivate that manually; however, after that configuration and the implementation of proper groups and policies, the tool is essentially hands off. As for changes experienced, we had less time managing patches and more time for other tasks.
It's less overhead compared to running Puppet and Ansible awx. It also provides more visibility as those tools are primarily Configuration Management, which can handle patching but not patching specifically. Reporting is something you'd have to configure yourself. Automox wins in terms of ease of use and not overcomplicating patching.
