Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

We use it to manage our item taxability, calculate taxes, and file returns across the US. We are also a partner of Avalara that recommends their products to our customers across North America. We implement their product along with the Avalara team and provide front-line support as needed. We coordinate with various departments throughout Avalara on a regular basis.

Pros

  • Rooftop-level tax calculation.
  • Partner programs.
  • Returns filing.
  • Item taxability management.

Cons

  • Implementation and support could use some updating with their recent expansion.
  • Pricing could be better suited for each customer.
  • More dedicated partner resources across different departments.
  • We file almost 500 returns a year and only have one person involved (with a normal job). Without Avalara, I'm not sure she could do it by herself.
  • We don't have to fight with states any longer, freeing us up for other tasks.
  • Our customers let Avalara handle taxes, so we can spend our time on better things as well!
We did our own implementation years ago, but we work with customer implementations regularly. We need to be very specific with our timelines and expectations for their implementation team, as they are very busy with their recent large increase in sales and implementations. Communication is the key to success with them, like others.

We had to build it ourselves into our own software, so it was difficult. However, it now works automatically to handle just about anything we throw at it.
It works as expected, but could always be easier for us and our users.
We use the returns filing and love it. We don't do Certs.
They can help with complex tax calculation, filing returns, managing exemption certificates, and much more around sales and other taxes. We have some complex scenarios with shipping and multiple parties involved for our customers, and Avalara can handle them well. Their connectors to 700 or so software packages make it easy to automate across multiple platforms and have one spot for all tax reporting.
