Overall Satisfaction with Dovetail

We use Dovetail mostly for qualitative analysis of research completed by user researchers, UX designers, and marketing researchers. We bring all our insights together there to continue to build upon our learnings to make our products better for our customers and their users. We analyze interviews, diary studies, survey responses, and more in Dovetail.

Pros

  • Support qualitative coding of data
  • Creating transcriptions of conversations
  • Using AI to summarize interviews for quick scanning
  • Integrating with Slack and Teams to share out research insights without members having access.

Cons

  • Search can be challenging for a company with multiple products and many user types.
  • Charts generated from survey data could have settings to allow us to change how they are filtered / displayed.
  • Having a table of contents in insights / linkable headers would help direct people the right spot of an insight.
  • Time savings for analysis
  • With AI summaries, offers a starting point for reporting
  • Searching previous research is very beneficial for risk reduction of repeating research.
Dovetail's AI features have helped speed up analysis in some ways. For example, after it learns your codebook (over time) it offers pretty good recommendations on which codes / tags to use in an interview. For global tagboards this is great, for project based ones it takes several interviews for it to learn.

Summarizing open text survey responses is super helpful to get the gist of a theme to help give an overarching summary in reporting on survey results.
Dovetail has helped researchers bring all their qualitative data into one location to link and grow their knowledge. We currently don't have product managers in the tool, but expanding out to those users would increase the impact and engagement of other teams in the organization. It provides a great resource to store research insights to catalogue them and make them searchable.
Dovetail has been pretty usable but it can be hard for new users to learn. As someone who is research operations minded, it would be helpful to put in some guardrails for new users and different role types in order to support their work but also keep things consisent and clean.
Dovetail meets our needs the best with global codebooks, data retention rules, etc. Other platforms offered functionality we had in other tools or limited our ability to control data management and access controls. We would love even more in Dovetail, but like the direction that the software is headed - it fits our needs right now.

Do you think Dovetail delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Dovetail's feature set?

Yes

Did Dovetail live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Dovetail go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dovetail again?

Yes

Dovetail does incredibly well at supporting qualitative data analysis - from helping you make sense of the data, capturing qualitative codes, and more.

Dovetail could improve on the quantitative survey analysis offering. Right now it's clunky, you need for format everything just right in a csv before bringing over to get approrpiate images - there is no way to edit question values after they are uploaded.
