Overall Satisfaction with HipChat
We adopted HipChat for our team as a better way to communicate when our organization was still using Jabber as the official communication tool. At the time, it was a much better solution for communication because it was more reliable and had better features than Jabber. We were also able to utilize many integrations with other services.
At the time, our organization was using Jabber for communication, which wasn't suited well for teams. HipChat brought a ton of great features when moving from Jabber, such as the ability to make rooms for each of our projects.
Rocket Chat is an open-source Slack clone, which doesn't seem as reliable or well designed as HipChat. It also lacks many of the HipChat features.
Slack seems to be the most popular tool of this type. I find that the Slack apps have a better design than HipChat. Slack also seems to be innovating a bit faster with features being added. However, for the price, HipChat looks to be a much better deal, as the price for Slack is quite high. They both offer a pretty good free plan though.
