Overall Satisfaction with Hyper-V
I am a consultant in the telecommunications industry. While we do not personally utilize Hyper-V on premise, I routinely support clients that have it deployed in their organization. All instances of Hyper-V that I have supported were organization-wide, or used in a development sandbox. Hyper-V is used to facilitate consolidation of server roles, or when Windows is the main operating system being deployed.
Pros
- Hyper-V does not need to be installed as its own entity, it can be added as a server role.
- Windows 10 virtualization is much more fluid than other competitors.
Cons
- Management with System Center should be more fluid and intuitive.
- There is significant overhead with Hyper-V compared to other alternatives.
- Hyper-V is competitively priced, and has allowed some of our clients the ability to create a successful, stable virtual environment that supports day to day operations.
- Patch Tuesday has previously been a major downside, however the alternatives also do require host reboots when significant patches are required, or downtime associated with VM reboots if not the host. It is starting to level off.
Hyper-V is powerful and virtualizes Windows exceptionally well, with less tweaking. It is also cheaper, and allows our clients to budget more for more frequent expansion. Its only real competitor in my opinion is VMware, and that is because vCenter is much more intuitive than System Center. I would pick Hyper-V over Virtual Box or KVM any day of the week.
