Overall Satisfaction with Hyper-V

We are a managed service provider focusing on the SMB market. We virtualize every server we put out to bolster supportability, disaster recovery, scalability, and ease our next lifestyle migration by divorcing the production environment from the hardware all together. Hyper-V's simplicity of implmentation and inexpensive licensing (included in Windows server) allows us to do this and lower the cost to service our customers while providing superior functionality!

Pros

  • Allows for agilty
  • Runs production reliably
  • Enhances backup and disaster recovery abilites
  • Gives us a secure platform from which to admin the production environment

Cons

  • Limited functionality without domain joined hosts
  • Positive ROI reducing hardware lifecycle replacement costs by 50 or greater compared to no virtualization
  • Positive ROI due to RTO being reduced 25-50% and enabling simplicity of remote recovery as compared to no virtualization
  • Positive ROI due to no licensing costs above and beyond windows server licenses where as many other virtualization platforms require additional licensing
It is quite intuitive. Junior techs are able to provision and administrate Hyper-V virtual server infrastructure with little to no additional training. Documentation from Microsoft is easily avaliable and decently well written. Hyper-V is reliable and does what it is supposed to. Can be admin from an intuitive gui, or aoutmated with extensive powershell.
Hyper-V is much simpler and less costly the VMWare. Administration is far more intuitive. This reduces cost to implement, and cost to maintain. In our SMB focused environment (10-70 users) the enterprise advantages of VSphere (multi-site, blade / SAN architecture, and scaleability) and the additional licensing cost do not present value. Hyper-V has never left us wanting!

Do you think Hyper-V delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Hyper-V's feature set?

Yes

Did Hyper-V live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Hyper-V go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Hyper-V again?

Yes

Hyper-V is well suited to virtualizing low production server count environments without WAN replication or failover on discrete host hardware. It starts to be less competitive in more enterprise environments where WAN replication or SAN / Blade architecture is preferred. Scalability via dynamic resource allocation also does not seem to be as functional as the large V competition, although I have limited experience implementing this in either product.

Using Hyper-V

8 - Level 2 and greater service delivery staff at an MSP focusing on the SMB market.
8 - All of our Level 2 and above MSP service delivery folks do in one capacity or another.
  • Improving backup and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Abstracting production environment from hardware
  • Providing a secure environment from which to administrate the production environment
  • Virtualizing even single server implementation to lower TCO
Hyper-V has been a huge competitive advantage simplifying support for our customers, reducing admin stress, lowering customer costs, and improving our profitability.

Hyper-V Training

Yes very easy to learn without training. I would never tell someone to not seek out training, but if you are not a training type person or shop... Yes Hyper-V is absurdly intuitive. It is well documented, and there are tons of forum and reddit posts to assist with challenges as well!
