Overall Satisfaction with IBM SPSS Statistics

IBM SPSS Statistics is used in working with undergrad students that I teach to have them apply their skills in research-based psychology courses. IBM SPSS Statistics is a good way to get students started with intimidating statistical analysis of data using a GUI system (point-and-click) that is more straightforward than more advanced analytical tools.
  • Easy to use
  • Output appears as pre-made tables
  • Intuitive GUI system
  • Can be easier to look at your dataset and each variable
  • More advanced analyses
  • Putting output in APA or other relevant formats
  • Ability to use/save syntax easily (replicability) relative to other systems
  • Cost
  • Negative - An expensive software, others are free
  • Negative - Not often useful in corporate world for students after they graduate
It is not necessarily used in an operational capacity. But it is efficient, as stated, in working with students and novices.
It has a business impact in helping us to meet the learning needs of the ultimate stakeholders of an undergraduate university, the students.
For my own statistical analyses, I personally use R and MPlus. However, these tools have a steep learning curve and require dedicated time and a course on their own. In m yopinion, they are not useful for trying to quickly acclimate undergrads to the new world of stats and research and data. IBM SPSS Statistics is better suited for these needs (especially when provided by the university already).

Do you think IBM SPSS Statistics delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with IBM SPSS Statistics's feature set?

Yes

Did IBM SPSS Statistics live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of IBM SPSS Statistics go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy IBM SPSS Statistics again?

No

I would recommend IBM SPSS Statistics to colleagues who are new to statistical analyses and have an introductory grasp of statistics and the types of statistical analyses. Ultimately, that is where IBM SPSS Statistics is well-suited. It is a great tool with a point-and-click system for getting acclimated to data analysis. Once you move into a realm of more advanced analytics (and thus the need for degrees of freedom in how analyses are conducted and the types of models that are built), I do not believe from my experience that is where IBM SPSS Statistics is suited. Furthermore, for collaborations across research teams, other products like R are better suited for this functionality.

Using IBM SPSS Statistics

500 - The primary users of SPSS at our university are students. SPSS is often used in their statistical courses and is a requiremenet there. Otherwise, SPSS is often used by graduate students in less statistically-rigorous programs, or older faculty who have not yet adopted to newer software. However, SPSS is available to all students and faculty.
Unknown how many people support SPSS in-house. I have never needed to rely on support. There are pretty robust resources and manuals in place to help students download the software, and online materials for how to use the point and click system.
  • Education
  • Analysis
  • Publishing
  • Gaining familiarity with statistics
  • Students who will never need to do statistics in their organizational work
While I'd encourage my students to use more softwares that are readily available and are likely to be part of the future in organizations, SPSS is ultimately more accessible to novices, particularly when coursework needs to focus more on content than software training. Many older faculty will continue to lobby for SPSS, continuing its purchase at the university level.

Evaluating IBM SPSS Statistics and Competitors

I was not the decision maker for the purchase.
I was not responsible or part of the decision-making process for purchasing SPSS at my organization.

I'm not sure if the premium support was purchased. I just go through our organization's IT support to receive assistance on any of our products. I think they usually have people who they train on any given product that's an employee of our organization.
I've never received support directly from IBM.
