Overall Satisfaction with MasterControl Quality Excellence

We use MasterControl Quality Excellence primarily for document control and training. We make more limited use of the process modules for audit management, continuous improvement, and nonconformance.
MasterControl Quality Excellence was originally adopted as part of ISO 9001 certification effort, allowing us a place to create, approve, store, and train to quality management system documentation.

Pros

  • Audit ready document approval process
  • Ensures regular review of QMS documentation and roles
  • Interconnected modules allow clear links from nonconformance, to corrective action, to QMS change, to training.
  • Configurable for each organization's use cases

Cons

  • Software is built around life science industry. If you're not in a life science industry, the default forms, workflows, roles, etc... need to be significantly reconfigured to fit use scenarios
  • They offer a great suite of trainings in their associated learning portal, but these trainings cannot be easily selected ala carte and migrated into your instance for easy, tailored employee training
  • Named license structure doesn't work well for our organization. Would prefer a concurrent license structure.
  • There is an upcharge for the full report generation function (e.g. designing custom reports) and the out-of-box reporting function is clunky and substandard.
  • Allowed us to attain an ISO 9001 certification in less than 2 years with only one full-time dedicated resource
Employee feedback is that the software is clunky and overcomplicated. Passwords regularly need to be reset and it's an additional charge if you want to be able to change the frequency at which you are required to change your password.
Not intuitive.
Back button/arrow functions closer to a home button than a back arrow.
There are two different search functionalities that operate differently existing side-by-side on the homepage. Which one you select can alter what is returned in the search.
MasterControl Quality Excellence was largely selected due to the familiarity the incoming quality manager had with the software. It would have been difficult to meet the targeted certification date if the administrator of the software had no experience using it.
MasterControl Quality Excellence was price competitive with the other considered options.

If you are a life science company, this product would probably rate closer to 9/10. This is the customer base to which the product caters. The software is constantly updated to support changing regulatory requirements.
If you are not a life science company, this product is a 5/10. With every update, the software becomes more complex and moves further away from the basic functionalities for which you purchased it.
