Microsoft Entra ID - The good and the bad told from a small business IT Manager
Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Entra ID
We use Entra ID (Formerly Azure ID) to enable SSO (Single Sign on) internally (Keeper, Bamboo HR, etc) and to also enable domain password resets via the web to facilitate easier access after hours and on weekends.
Pros
- SSO (Single Sign On)
- Password reset integration with LDAP
- Ability to access anywhere in the world
Cons
- The interface is a little clunky
- It is NOT always intuitive, almost needs and engineer to work
- Single Sign On has allowed us to seamlessly integrate other applications into our Microsoft Sign on.
- Outside of normal business hours password resets have saved me from getting up at 1AM to reset a password
- Entra requires me to engage with a Specialized Engineer at times to understand in order to work with business needs, incurring extra costs.
We have our Identities on-prem. Our CEO doesn't like to have applications to have full cloud control. As a Defense Contractor, we have to be conscious of cloud based platforms and to keep it at a minimum to keep the data and business safe.
We have, we have used it to integrate with Keeper Password Manager and also for BambooHR application internally. Both of which are not Microsoft Products.
Keeper Password Manager is the only SaaS application we have that is using Entra.
The only on-prem app we have connected is LDAP.
The only on-prem app we have connected is LDAP.
Users are generally happier when they can reset their own passwords.
On the other side, users are met with frequent needs to use Multi-Factor Authentication - even after just providing Authenticator access on the same machine for the same application. I understand the security side of it, but it is a bit excessive.

Honestly, it was recommended from my MSSP to use. So nothing else was compared to it.
