Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

Basically, we use Microsoft Power BI for getting insights from large financial data (stand-alone or multiple relational databases) related to various investors in the entity. Insights related to investment patterns of various categories of financial instruments, impact on investor allocations, decision making based on risk averse investors and financial analysis of overall impact on the portfolio at a micro and macro level with additional insights in drilling down the details at a granular level.

Various departments are using them in silos with the future possibility of integrating the results and applying the insights the at whole organization level.

Earlier, the scope for detailed review was not possible, but due to development in the Power BI features, users at any level can get insights at a granular level.

  • First thing is, Power BI belongs to the Microsoft family, which makes it easy for the user to acquaint with the advanced features and implement them to get insights faster on the available data.
  • Issues in the application can be resolved faster due to the expert availability at Microsoft.
  • The ability of the application to connect to various sources (internal and external) helps to get real-time updates faster, based on user requirements.
  • Technology is always evolving, you cannot get the final product in one go. Need constant review to meet the unique & changing business requirements.
  • Need to focus on similar applications of competitors, and try to embed features, which are more robust and advanced.
  • Need more Data Visualization (Statistical & Built-in graphs) with various categories to pick and choose from. So that even the average user can also use the too.
Based on the latest reviews from Magic Quadrant, Tableau is rated high among all the applications in this category with its rich features in terms of connectivity, visualizations, and various other features. But the cost of using the application is bit high from my personal experience. Also, Tableau does not provide free version for personal (Individual Users) use, unlike Microsoft Power BI. When you allow people to explore the software, there is a great scope that it penetrates into market with higher chances of making a positive decision to implement the Enterprise version (paid version for Businesses).

There is no "One Size Fits All" approach for anything in this world, What might be good for some, ends up irrelevant for others. So, it purely depends on the business requirements, based on size, user level and industry involved in.

Definitely suitable for various fields in the financial services industry (insurance claims, audit services, tax services, etc.).
